I'm a junior in high school right now and I really want to go to MSU. I'm going to visit a few colleges over the summer and start applying in the fall. Right now, I only have a 3.1 GPA, 24 ACT (plan to retake), 90 hours community service, member of FCCLA. Participated in track (Shotput and Discus). I take Advanced English now and plan on taking 3 AP classes next year. I've had normal classes up until this year where I took Advanced English. But, I did score a 29 on my English section of the ACT. I want to be a child psychologist. And I'm taking AP Psych next year. Do I have a good chance of getting into MSU?

According to College Board, MSU admits ~70% of applicants. The middle 50% ACT range for MSU is 23-28. That means 25% of admitted students scored at or below a 23, and 25% scored at or above a 28. You fall within the middle 50% for that, however your GPA is low, and that’s going to be a handicap for you, wherever you apply to. Is that your unweighted GPA? If so, whats your weighted?

Yes. It’s my unweighted and I don’t know my weighted GPA. But do you know if Michigan State recalculates GPA? My GPA was brought down a lot by gym and weight training. I’d have a 3.4-3.7 without electives added.

MSU: Match

In state for MSU. GPA around a 3.57. ACT a 30. Didn’t take the SAT. I have a ton of community service hours, including volunteering at several hospitals and tutoring. I have decent ec’s (lots of clubs). Involved in a lot of religious programs (youth group board, teachers assistant at religious school). Personal statement will be good. Also going to send in a rec letter just to boost my app. 5 ap’s so far and took 2 SAT subject tests. Also a legacy (both my sisters went there). I am also asian.

^ You should start a new thread. But it seems you are a low match for MSU.

aireedeshay,

I think if you bump your ACT up a few points then you will be in even if you don’t and maybe you boost your GPA then you will be in. Right now I think you would most likely get in.

Would you say being a legacy helps my chances?

You’re not a legacy unless your parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents went there rather you have a precedent
