Let me start from the beginning, last January my family and I went on a ski vacation, I used my regular school backpack to bring some stuff. My mom wanted me to throw in this airplane sickness medicine to my backpack for my little brother. He ended up not using, after we got back I forgot to take it out. Actually I more forgot I had it in there.

Last Tuesday, the school had dogs come in and sniff lockers and such, they found the medication in my locker pulled me out of class and everything..with police and such.

I explained to them why it was there, but they said they still have to suspend me. They said expulsion could be over turn at the hearing. My mom asked why would I be expelled for something that isn't abused? They said "the school needs to have a doctors note that you have it and it needs to be held in the nurse office."

My parents are not mad at me, just at the school.

I am in NHS, good grades and everything, never been in trouble. I have the hearing Thursday 21st...the last day of my 10 day suspension. They will decide if I will be expelled or not, we already hired an attorney and everything.

This is so messed up..that this could ruin my life.

I can't understand that there are fights all the time and they just get suspended, while here I mistakenly have a non abusive drug and am probably going to get expelled for it.

That’s messed up. 10 days?!

File a counter lawsuit against the school. They will shat their pants and back off.

Uh oh… I’d better get rid of my ibuprofen- holy cow! Why did they bring the dogs in in the first place? Schools are getting ridiculous >.<

That truly is so unfair! I don’t think they will expel you as it seems awful silly. I know people who have brought Tylenol or ibuprofen to school because they weren’t feeling well that one day and it didn’t make sense to get a note. But you didn’t even know what you were doing!

I really am sorry for your situation, and you could always change schools? I wouldn’t want to go to your school after they put you through this.

That’s so stupid…
Aren’t most airplane sickness medications non-prescription anyway?
I’m sure you can sue them if this does go on your record, it’s completely unfair that this would happen.

…dang. dogs and everything? 10 days?

please sue.

They bring dogs in allot, because I go to a ruff school where there are allot of drugs in general and fights.

Most likely not expelled but a couple of things which may help:
-have mom make out an affidavit to submit to the committee stating it was her suggestion that the anti-nausea medicine be put into your backpack and got left there. Have her have it witnessed.
-Consider taking a lawyer with your family to the proceedings depending on your state law about this matter which should be found in a) your school student parent handbook and b) your state DOE as most of these rules come down from there.

Many might advise against these suggestions as too heavy handed. Still 10 days of expulsion was pretty harsh too, wasn’t it. Best to be prepared, with which you can help your parents by laying out a time line of events and remembering to say how very sorry you are for the mishap.

Hoping this works out in your favor and for all the many other high schoolers to which this happens. Do read that student handbook and know it cold from now on. Running through your back back every other day or so to see what’s there and perhaps shouldn’t be isn’t a bad idea either.

I don’t think dogs will even “smell” air motion medication… there has to be something more to the medication or to the story.

Do the legal system a favor and sue. This is a complete injustice and you do not deserve to be punished. Get that attorney to fight to the fullest for you.
