Will I Be Penalized For This?

Hello everyone,

My current undergraduate institute has an honors program reserved for only 14 students each year, and selection is purely based on the high school record. Thus, since I didn't have the credentials, I am unable to take classes with an honors designation. Moreover, the program does not accept transfers from the "regular" curriculum to its program; as mentioned earlier, the students are based on high school.

I'm looking to transfer to Georgetown, however. I come from an affiliated Jesuit school, have a 3.7 GPA, decent EC's, and hopefully will be able to procure some good recommendations.

** I asked the Director of the honors program if I could take it, but he denied. So, will this be frowned upon in the transfer process for taking the classes 97% of the school takes? Thanks

No. Honors courses are not required for transfer admission to another school and all cases are considered holistically. (I sound like I'm quoting a website)

I didn't take many honors classes, but for a different reason, and I made a small note in the additional comments section. You, too, may want to do that, but the fact that only 14 students can participate in the Honors Program makes it clear that it's not going to be a bad thing if you weren't able to.

It won't hurt of course, but it would help, how much? no one knows exactly but I can't say it's too much...

yes, the honors classes would help because it shows a stronger courseload...but it wont hurt you that you didnt take it, a ton of people (a huge majority infact) dont take honors classes...and a majority of transfer probably dont either
dont sweat it =) a 3.7 is impressive, and g'town is generous to their transfers, so i think you have a great shot

Thanks guys, but I didnt do well in high school. Primarily, I went to a, shall I say, "crappy" high school and it didn't provide adequate resources for an individual to achieve his utmost potential.

I had a 3.2 GPA in HS, but I managed to take all 3 AP courses (the only ones offered!!) and scored a 4 on each of them.

I got an 1890 on the new SAT (690 V, 550 M, 650 WR).

How much does the high school record really count for?

The longer you've been in college, the less the high school record and test scores count. If you're a sophomore applying for junior standing, your college record will be primarily important. If you're a freshman applying for sophomore standing, high school stats still count quite a bit.
