Hello, I was wondering if I'm going to be rescinded by UC Santa Cruz due to the fact that I went through a huge bout of depression first semester of senior year, and I basically ended up with these grades:

Physics B: C-
AP Biology: D+
AP English Literature: D+ (This might be changed to a C)
Stagecraft: A
AP Stats: C
Economics: C

I went from a 4.4 junior year to this. Everything else has been fine I really don't know what to do at this point. If I get rescinded, then I don't know what to do, since there's no other school that I applied to and got accepted other than UC Riverside, and I didn't submit the SIR. I can't even join a community college, since it's too late.

I blew it all, my whole high school career, because of those two classes that I messed up on. At this point, I'm seriously considering suicide, seeing as how the situation seems hopeless. Is there anything I can do at all?

Please contact your doctor for help! Mental health issues are so hard, and you need support right now. It might help to contact the college with documentation of your situation. Best of luck - you will be in my thoughts.

Calm down, the situation is not hopeless. First off, absolutely go to a doctor. For a few reasons, help is needed and a great thing (especially therapy- oh my gosh, therapy is the best thing ever) (I also have depression and have been screwed in grades cus of it). And something else a doctor can give you is a note, officially diagnosing you with depression- that way you can use it as proof you’re not just making this up. Contact UCSC, explain to them the situation- most schools are understanding, and ESPECIALLY UCSC- your junior grades are PHENOMENAL, much much higher than the average gpa for UCSC freshmen. This all works in your favor.

Hope is not loss, I promise :). ALSO. Worse case scenario, they do rescind your admission? You can get on the waitlist for community college- you can crash classes on the first day, and explain your situation to teachers, and ask them if there’s no room right now if you can keep coming back until the last day that you can add classes (about half will go “NO I’M FULL GO AWAY” and about half will be willing, and everytime I’ve done that- waited till the last day- I got in, because the teacher saw I was a dedicated student.) And even then, even if you can’t get into any classes? You’ll have a semester off- just a semester.

This is life. It doesn’t go perfectly. We can’t be as perfect as we know we have the potential to be- and god, god I understand. I’ve spent the last few years hating myself for not having a 4.5 gpa, for not getting into Cal- because I know I’m smart enough, and then this stupid depression and ADD gets in the way. But you are not defined by your accomplishments. You are not cherished for your accomplishments. You are cherished for being yourself- for being someone that people can love.

And I think it’s worth lot more to have to struggle through something and get through it, than be a okay and get a 4.5.

I promise you can do it. I promise :)

You have your whole life ahead of you and you will do great things - you just have to believe in yourself. Obviously you are a very qualified person, much more than most! Here is a link that you can refer to, if you ever need it, of colleges that still have openings. The CA colleges are, in my opinion, not flexible enough, senior year is very hard not only academically but emotionally. I wish you the best of luck - getting a doctor note may help with communicating with UCSC, but just in case, here is a list of schools that still have openings at this time. You can look into (google, etc.) schools that have “rolling admissions” - some of the larger schools, that still accept people year round. Hope is not lost - hang in there! You could also check out University of Central Florida, they are large and may have openings as well. Unlike the CA colleges, many out of state schools also accept people in the Spring semester. Also if the Community College nearest to you is full, maybe there are others you can try? Not sure if you have to stay in CA, but here is the list of schools that still have openings:

Again, hang in there - we’re rooting for you!!!

PS Is there any way you can beg the teacher(s) to change the D+ into C- (there’s not much of a point difference - maybe you can do a project or something - if you explain the situation, maybe they will offer you some way to make up some work? I made this same mistake - taking too many AP/hard classes senior year. How many of your classes are AP? Because those get weighted in your GPA. I think if you just don’t have any D’s you might be ok - I’m not an expert, but just by reading the conditions of acceptance. Also if you can get some help from your high school counselor to talk to your teachers for you, to try and negotiate the D’s into C’s, that might help too.

Stop tripping it not the end of the world haha. I went through the same thing except I partied hard senior year ende up with Ds and Cs but you can always sign up for community college you just have the hassle of getting into classes you need then just transfer our. Did you get good AP scores although u did bad? Anyways either way you can make the best of a situation and just do a TAG or just plan to transfer. But ya you’ll most likely be rescinded from the UC because you didn’t complete the requirements.

Um, right, telling someone who is having a complete anxiety attack “lul calm down it’s not a big deal” is kinddd of the exact opposite of what they need to hear This is said as someone who has frequent anxiety attacks :/

Since you’ve already been accepted, the only way you can be rescinded is if you fall short of the basic requirements. The only potential problem I see is the D+ in English, which might cause you to fall short of 4 years of English, but maybe you have another class that’ll substitute in it’s place, or it’ll end up being a C anyway, or you can pass the AP exam and use that as credit. Let your English know about your situation, how those few % points are crucial to your future. Usually, teachers will give you benefit of the doubt and bump you up.

Also, it is NOT too late to go to Community College. Not even close. Some CC’s haven’t even opened their registrations yet, (there’s one, De Anza, in the Bay Area that doesn’t start registration until August). Look around a bit, and you’ll find one you can attend for one semester/quarter (you might end up having to commute a bit, but hey, whatever you have to do, right?), and then the next semester/quarter you can go to your local CC, since you’ll have plenty of time to enroll and register.

Worst case scenario: You miss one quarter or semester of Community college, then start right away the next term and start progressing towards a transfer path. You seem to have several AP credit opportunities, plus some summer classes, and you just might still be able to transfer within 2 years. Once you transfer, you’re back on track and this whole fiasco is behind you.

There’s always a way to make things work, just be flexible and plan out your classes smartly.

To be honest, I highly doubt you’ll get rescinded. UCSC isn’t gonna let a 4.4 GPA student go just because he/she slipped up one semester.

I just spoke to an admissions representative, and they didn’t seem very understanding in the least. After explaining to him my situation, he said he had forgotten what we were talking about; I reminded him that it was about my being rescinded. After giving him the details, he asked me the reason for waiting until now to report the D’s, he also noted that they couldn’t be sure if I would succumb to another bout of depression at college and end up failing. He also mentioned that there was no way to prove that I was going through depression first semester since I wasn’t diagnosed until recently. The admissions director was also made out to be extremely intolerant and rigid, at least according to the representative. He didn’t really tell me if I had a chance or not, he simply sent me a form to report my D’s. He told me to talk to the director after they made a decision, which means I’m pretty much screwed. To make matters worse, I found out that there was an error in my UC app. I had put that I had an A in Human Geo, when I actually had a B, so I’m definitely going to go through some trouble for that.

At this point, I’ve pretty much accepted the fact that I’m going to a CC. Thanks for the replies; I really appreciate it. I don’t know what to do, I’ll just send the form and explanation and see what happens.

Also, I forgot to mention something. How long would it take for me to transfer out of the CC if my major is Microbiology? I have AP credit for these classes: Human Geo, English Lit and Comp, APUSH, and Spanish Lit.

You can check on assist.org for classes you have to take in community college that will satisfy the requirements for the first two years General Ed requirements for UC (IGETC). On the plus side, you will be saving money at CC. You should also talk to a counselor at the CC to make sure you are taking exactly the right classes to satisfy the requirements to transfer to UC.
You could try to appeal the decision if they rescind you application - maybe if it was a temporary, one-time situation that was causing your depression?
You can check on this website [Ms. Sun’s UC Admissions Blog](http://askmssun.livejournal.com/) where there is info about appeals, etc. and even services you can look into which provide help with appeals.
Best of luck with your situation!
