Will I Be Too Old For College?

Hey people, whats going on? I just have a question. I am 20 years old, (21 in August). I am going into the Navy this summer for a four year stint. I will probably be out in the summer of 2009, at which point I want to re-start college. (I've had two semesters at a community college).

I know your never to old to LEARN at college and all that, I am just wondering if I will fit in socially. I will be 25 when I start. I'd like to be able to go out to partys and college clubs and all that kind of stuff, but I am concerned I'd stand out as an "old guy" or something. Your supposed to be able to have a good social life and all that in college, I don't want my age to distract from that. What do you guy and gals think?

Are their slightly older people in your social group or what have you? Do you know any former military people who are now students? And how are they doing? Thanks for any and all help.

PS: Do you freshman girls like the 23+ year old guys? :D

But...no...you won't be too old....there are always graduate schoolers that are around your age, med-schoolers...freshman girls love older guys most of the time....i'd say you'll have no trouble fitting in...you should try Virginia Tech or Texas A&M...they have campus cadet programs and several former-military members go there...you'll get to enjoy the experience just as much...plus....ppl love knowin some1 over 21 at college :p

Funny you should mention Texas A&M, that is my first choice, I live in Houston, about an hour from College Station. Gig'em.

Good to hear I won't be too old. Though I may pass on living in the dorms. 25 year old among a bunch of 18-19 year freshman seems kinda funny.:)

Although I won't rule it out entirely, especially if it is a co-ed dorm.:D

Dude I was 23 when I started at CC and 25 when I started Kent State. You will be fine agewise for college, just DO NOT live on campus because they have stupid rules for the children in the dorms that make you feel like your back in the service. Good luck in the Navy and enjoy your year afloat, thats the only thing I envy squids for is the exotic locales they get to visit.

I plan on having plenty of stories of far away lands for all the girls once I get to college.:D

And yeah, i'll probably get an apartment. After living on a ship and in barracks for four years, it would be really nice to have my own room.

Hey, I dont think dat ur age will be a major problem, Colleges tend to encourage older student to integrate the social life... besides i didnt hear much about problems with "mature" students in other countries nor in the states...

So best of luck in the Navy... btw hope dat ull become a SEAL! lol.

Joev are you ex-military? If so what branch?

Anyone else?

I am in and have been in the Air Guard for the past ten years since high school. They put my base on the closing list though so who knows how long that will last. :( I have two buddies who are ex-Navy who did exactly what you are doing. One is going to Southern Illinois becoming a engineer, and the other one is attending UIUC's engineering program. (both in state) They are both 27 and having a blast in college. I guess going from being a Navy nuke to a state college is a nice break :)

"ur prolly too old.

try community colleges, where theres alot more old ppl dere."

Try taking your advice from people who can type coherently.. no offensve.

My brother went to Crown College (in Minnesota) at the age of 24- he hasn't had a problem at all.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with starting college at 25. Quite a few of my friends are in the older age bracket (ie. older than the average 20 years old for 3rd year in college), and it's just not an issue.

btw, I'd be thrilled to have 25 year old ex-Navy boys in my classes :D

How was your Navy experience NavyLS1? I'm considering doing NROTC during college, but I'm not sure at this point. How difficult was the physical component of your time, and what was general life like?

Good luck in college, sir.

Read a little closer Electronic Error, he won't know the answer to that question for another 4 years. Deinitely do ROTC you will not regret it, they pay for everything.

As a previous military member, you'll have an easy time managing your time, not getting into trouble, and in general behaving in a mature manner. Your age is not a problem, and I'm sure college will be a LOT easier for you than it'll be for 18 year olds who can't stop procrastinating!

As long as I make the grades and attract the hot woman all will be good.:D

Ditto what rainbow kirby said...

Ex-navy men... ahh

The whole military being older angle never worked for me in college, but maybe its just because I am too cool for school.

I'm sorry..this is really random..I just couldn't help thinking that in four years you're going to look at this question and all of the responses and just laugh...

on the more serious side, good luck with the navy and military life; should present an interesting if not exciting four years...

Not sure if how long you want to stay in service but there are nice programs like BOOST and STA-21 that offer 3-4 years tuition and commission for enlisted folks.

~~~navy boys look like any other guy, aw they're sweeties though.
joev brings up some good points. You will be fine starting later on though. Sometimes the rules in the dorms can be difficult to deal with if you are older. You will fit right into your classes as your newly gained knowledge after being in the Navy will help you excel in lots of ways. Good luck!
