Will I be wasting my ED to Wharton?

hello all.
I am a junior in high school in Long Island, NY.

I am concerned whether I would be wasting my early decision option to college if I apply to Wharton School of Business at UPenn. I plan on studying Economics/Business.

I would say I am in the top 10 of a class of 300 in a competitive high school.
I had a 720 on CR. 700 on M and 690 on Writing.
I also got a 800 on my SAT II for World History, and I got a 800 on my SAT II in U.S History, a 770 on Chem and a 710 on Math I.

I have 99.4 GPA weighted average and over a 97 average without the weight.

These are list of my accomplishments:

I also plan on getting great recommendation leaders from my Accounting teacher who also runs FBLA in my school and my AP US History Teacher.

I also intend on attending a business training camp for four days at a local college and visted the UPenn campus. I hope you guys give me honest feedback and do not be too cruel lol. Also, I will not be retaking any tests.

How would it be a waste? ED to Penn /Wharton are for those who see this as their first choice, without a doubt, and don’t need to stress about comparing Fin Aid and who don’t need first semester Senior grade boost for the GPA. If these apply to you (and the fact that it seems you’re a viable candidate), then I’d advise ED.

im only concerned about my sat score if it would give me a disadvantage.

From your topic “will I be wasting my ED to Wharton”, I’m assuming that you think you can do better than Wharton. If that is the case and Wharton is not your absolute #1, then perhaps you should use your ED at a college that you will attend regardless of wherever else you get accepted. While you have a solid app that shows concentration in business, I wouldn’t say you’re a shoo-in for Wharton(or HYPSM etc since their applicant pools are similar ) so I think ED to where you WANT TO GO most and not where your think you chance of being accepted is greatest will serve you the best, as at that level, acceptance=crapshoot.

Disclaimer* Please do not be offended if I sounded harsh. If after evaluating all your ED schools Wharton is still your top choice, I wholeheartedly recommend EDing as the ED acceptance rate is higher than RD(and you get to relax afterward) :)

Wharton is my number one. But, I want to ensure I get into a place that is great and attainable. I know college admissions is very selective, but I want to know if EDying will be ridiculous for wharton since I don’t want to be shot down and be stuck RDing to other schools. I also planning to apply to Columbia, Cornell(AEM) , Carnegie Mellon, Northwestern, Emory, University of Chicago, and NYU Stern.

bump…

Would it be a waste? No. You might want to get your SAT up a bit though.

If Wharton is your #1 don’t hesitate to apply ED…acceptance rates are dismal but SO MUCH BETTER than RD. Also, even though you’re applying ED to Wharton, you can still take advantage of EA—such as at UChicago—since it’s not binding and the pool is smaller. Even if you get waitlisted/rejected from ED, you still have good chance as a RD applicant(I didn’t apply ED/EA anywhere). Just make sure you pour your heart into your common app essay+supplement essays and you’ll be good to go. Best of Luck!

Depends on your priorities and risk tolerance. I’d say realistically your chances at Wharton ED are fair at best given your relatively-low-for-Wharton SAT scores and SATII math scores coupled with solid-but-not-outstanding-for-Wharton credentials otherwise. But, of course, you have a much better shot applying ED than you would applying RD. So, if your desire to attend Wharton dwarfs all other considerations, it makes sense to apply to Wharton ED. On the other hand, if another school on your list is (i) a very close second to Wharton, (ii) considerably more likely ED than Wharton, and (iii) not a high probability RD (perhaps NYU Stern fits all three of those criteria for you?), then you may be better off applying to that school. Obviously, there are infinite variations on these themes, so balancing the considerations becomes key. Good luck.

Not gonna lie…your stats are a bit low, but if Wharton is your dream school I think you’ll regret not doing ED

Not really a waste, you could get in. But let’s be real, that never seems to happen with Wharton so start looking into your backup options.

Realistically that ED might be put to better use at Cornell AEM since you seem to already be involved with Cornell. Cornell AEM is a solid program and is only getting better/more prestigious. Strategically it seems best to apply ED to and upper-match (borderline reach).
