Will I even have a chance at Michigan? :'(

College and Program I applied to: LSA and Preferred Admissions to Ross

Stats:
SAT I (by section): n/a
SAT IIs: n/a
ACT + writing test: 28 Composite: 29 English, 28 Reading, 29 Math, 28 Science, Writing: 11/12
APs: AP US History, AP English Language and Composition, AP Chemistry, AP Microeconomics, AP Calculus AB
Accelerated Courses: Geometry AC, Algebra 2 AC, Analysis AC, Humanities Literature AC, Humanities Social Studies AC.
IBs: n/a
GPA (UW): 3.97 weighted. I'm not sure what my unweighted is because my school doesn't tell us. All courses are graded on a 4.0 scale. If you take an AC or AP course it is still a 4.0 scale but if you get an A- it counts as an A on your GPA, B+ counts as an A- on your GPA, B- counts as a B on your GPA, etc.
Rank: Top 10 percent (highest rank you can be at my school) of 383 seniors.

ECs listed on app: President and founder of my own start-up business, competitive ballroom dancer, NHS Community Service Chair, President of Interact Club, member of Ross School of Business High School Program (MREACH), member of DECA, member of U of M's high school Asian leadership program, varsity crew coxswain 3 years.
Job/Work Experience: I work as a barista at a local coffee shop. I train people on how to make drinks too.
Essays (subject and responses):
Common App Personal Statement: How quitting soccer taught me lessons and opened up new opportunities for me (ball room dancing).
Michigan Community Essay: Talked about work, lessons, etc.
Why Michigan (ross): talked about the lessons learned from creating my own business.

Teacher Recs: 1 from AP English teacher, 1 from ECON teacher...both teachers loved me so I'm assuming it was good
Other Recs: Got one from my friend'd dad. He is the chair for the executive board of UPenn (wharton).
Counselor Rec: Great because my Counselor LOVES me. Out of all her students she picked me to win the prestigious award.
Applied on (EA?): EA
Hook (if any): My mom, dad, and older brother all attending Michigan.
State or Country: Ann Arbor, Michigan
School Type: Public, very competitive, in Ann Arbor
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Male

your ACT is low. the rest of your app looks good, though. i’m sure you have a chance, but it’d be much better if you had a higher ACT

Your only weakness is your ACT score, which is just slightly under Umich’s range. Considering though that you are a Michigan resident and Ann Arbor resident you have a good chance at getting in. Not a guarantee, but a solid chance.

o.0
Oh really, as opposed to what? Where the 60th percentile is the highest at other schools? Still, claiming top 10% isn’t the highest. Rank #1 is the highest.

i think he meant that the school doesn’t disclose absolute rankings, but rather just some distinction for those in the top 10%

I don’t think AAPS even rank students.

That’s a really weird way to weight grades and Michign will definitely just calculate what your actual unweighted would be. Slight/mid reach.

@ForeverAlone no, i meant that my school ranks by decile so its every 10 percent. The highest you can be is top 10 percent of your class. Of course there are people who are ranked higher than me, but my school only specifies by 10 percent ranks. Does that make sense?

Which school do you go to? At Pioneer, the counselor said near 20% students get GPA 4.0 (due to their weighting method). That is one of the reasons they don’t rank their students anymore. Anyway, ACT 28 would make you a high match for UMich LSA and a reach for Ross. Did you take SAT also, or retake the ACT? I would expect a higher score from the top 10% students of Huron or Skyline.

AAPS does use a very weird way to weight grades. It is really not fair for A+ students. Only students with A- or below will get a higher weighted GPA.
