Will I fit in at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill?

Hi I'm originally from Michigan and am looking at UNC at Chapel Hill. I've never been down south before but I would love to move down there for college for a change of scenery. I'm going to be touring UNC soon but I'm afraid that I won't fit in. I'm a very preppy girl who comes from a well off family. I've always considered myself more of a liberal and my family is that way too. I'm also looking at Miami University of Ohio but I would be surrounded by people of my own type and I'm not too sure if I want that. Would I fit in at UNC?

In general, UNC leans to the left. Politically, you would fit in there. I think there is a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds there. I think you would find a variety of students there, including preppy, but I would not consider it a predominantly preppy campus if you are looking for that.

You will absolutely fit in. Bring your Vineyard Vines, Lilly Pulitzer collection and your pearls and you will be good to go.

Preppy, rich, and left leaning = most of UNC Chapel Hill students.

As a conservative student on campus, I will definitely agree with the observations above. The Chapel Hill/Durham vote in excess of 70% Democrat in the elections. There are so many students here but it really doesn’t feel too big either. You can find whatever crowd suits you.

Hey- I’m going to UNC Chapel Hill this year too!(:
Hhahah don’t worry- everyone there is super nice. Although, don’t refer to here as “down south” to locals… a lot of people have misconceptions about North Carolina being super southern, but it’s pretty much the same as any other school. I mean, how different can states really be from one another? Politics won’t matter too much either,

There’s TONS (i mean TONS) of preps at UNC. Make sure to have a pair of rainboots! (Literally all the girls wear them on rainy days)

Hey, and another tip.(: Don’t think about how similar people are to you…Being “well-off” shouldn’t prevent you from fitting in with people. Talk to everyone! It’s way more fun than being “surrounded by people of your ‘own type’”.

I love North Carolina so much. i’m originally from Ohio, but it is so much more beautiful down here. Lots of beautiful trees and flowers, and generally great weather. My only complaint is the coating of yellow pollen from the pine trees in the spring, and the humidity in the summer. But people are truly so friendly here, and I think you’ll find it easy to fit in and end up loving it as much as I do. (:

GO HEELS!

UNC and North Carolina is the perfect mix of southern hospitality without being too southern, if you know what I mean. Everyone can make a friend here, it is hard not to get involved with all the amazing opportunities we have here.
