Hi guys! I'm an international student from India and I had a few questions about Vassar. I've already sent my ED 2 because it's been my dream school for a while. However, now I hear that students from private boarding schools may not fit in because the atmosphere is a bit different. I'm not that preppy or anything, it's just that I want to know if there are cliques and all, what are the parties like and other stuff. Thank you :)

@12345n - Vassar has the reputation of being very accepting. If you are very conservative, either politically or religiously, you might find it a bit difficult, but if Vassar is your dream school, I assume you’ve done your research. I’ve not heard of anyone being upset by cliques there.

@stepay no haha I’m not conservative at all

@12345n - I think you will like it very much then.

I’m from India too and I just got accepted ED 1. And so far the people I’ve interacted with are the nicest and most accepting people I’ve ever come across. Vassar was my dream school too and It’s lived up to what I’d thought it’d be and more. I can’t wait for August. So go right ahead and apply!

@kushin haha okay that really helps! thank you :)

For what its worth, my daughter is currently finishing her first semester at Vassar and loves it. She has told me that the academic community, kids and social scene at Vassar are so much better and different than high school. With so many activities and organizations there is truly something for everyone. It sounds that the majority of kids participate in a wide variety of these activities. I don’t t think these fall into the classification of “cliques”. She’s been told that the closest thing to a fraternity and sorority are the various singing groups.

She would probably describes herself as being a more conservative person but has not complained of an atmosphere that is “too liberal”. In fact, she’s said that the diversity of political viewpoints has been invigorating

@vassrdad - I appreciate the view from a Vassar Dad. I will be one of those beginning in August! Glad to hear that your daughter loves it so much. I hope the same for mine, and I really think she will LOVE it too.

@vassrdad thank you so much I guess I was worrying about nothing then

If you enjoy music, Vassar is great and my brief exposures(two) have been awesome. We saw an acoustic quartet performance at the Loeb Art Center during one of the “Thursday Nights at the Museum”. On another occasion we heard someone playing great classical guitar as we passed the dorms after attending one of her choral performances. Not too many places where you get to study John Coltrane’s " A Love Supreme"

@vassrdad oh wow that’s so good to hear. Music is my life, I play for the orchestra

My son is an upperclassman now and I would say that there is a tremendous diversity of backgrounds (countries, ethnicities, private vs. public school, various degrees of economic privilege) and my son would agree that this student body is SO tolerant and accepting of each other and non-clique-ish that it’s one very special aspect of this college. My son has all kinds of friends and is involved in many different activities (e.g. music, writing for one of the campus publications, other groups he’s in) and he has friends from all of these different activities. Some of these people have visited our home during breaks and vacation periods throughout the years and I can say that these are the nicest, brightest, most open-minded young people I could ever hope my son could have the opportunity to associate with. We’re very pleased with his choice of college.

@Dmelanogaster alright thank you that was all I’d been hoping for
