Hi everyone, I'm a junior in high school and I started looking at colleges a little while ago, and Clemson just came onto my radar. I'm looking for a good engineering school, and I've heard Clemson is really good, without costing too much. I won't have time to go down and visit, since my family won't really be able to afford it, so I was hoping that someone could tell me if I would fit in at the school or not. I'm from Delaware, a little farther north, and even though I don't pay a lot of attention to politics, I'm a little more liberal in what I think. Would this negatively affect my college experience? I've heard that a lot of people at Clemson, and in SC in general, are conservative. Will this be an issue?

I can’t really say for sure anymore. I’m from Massachusetts and am moderate (neither conservative or liberal). I’ve heard some people on the conservative side even say that they have been annoyed by the religious people here but I’ve had no problem so far. I guess it really depends what people you run into unfortunately. So my answer I guess would be that it will be an issue if you let it be. There are tons of people on campus and even though the majority are conservative white christians, not everyone is. Politics isn’t a big deal here except if there’s a big election. There are racist people here but they are in the minority. Religion is a big deal to a lot of people here but some people could care less.

Okay, thanks Pierre, that’s all i was worrying about, I definitely think I’ll give it a try now. Was it hard to adjust to the social groups when you got there from Massachusetts? Or did you pretty much find a niche that you could fit into right away?

It was kinda weird at first because the people from South Carolina went to either the same high school or lived in the same area so they knew each other but after a while and you got to know people it was pretty easy to find your own group of people, much easier with the out of state students.

ah okay, thank you so much! You’ve definitely eased my nerves about Clemson a great deal. I’m hoping that I’ll get the chance to tour over the summer, it seems like it offers everything that I’ve been looking for in a school.

clemson might as well turn into a yankee school. I knew more kids from new jersey/philly then anywhere else besides south carolina obviously.
