Will i get a hope grant/scholarship next spring?

I did dual enrollment in high school and earned 29 college credits by the time i graduated. I got As and Bs in my college classes but 9th grade and 10th grade years i gave up on school and my gpa was very low so even though i was getting As and Bs 11th and 12th grade it was not enough to graduate with HOPE scholarship or grant. Im going to another college now and financial aid office said i can apply for HOPE when i get 30 credits. since i will have 30 credits at the end of this fall semester will I get a HOPE grant and/or scholarship for spring semester or do i have to wait for the next fall of 2015 when i do my new fasfa?
also I received pell grant $5,730.00 and the sub $3,500.00 and unsub $6,000.00 stafford loans to pay for school and those cover my tuition fees and room and board but i still have to pay for my books out of pocket. if i get the HOPE grant and/or scholarship for spring semester can i cancel my stafford loans for the spring semester and just pay for everything with HOPE?
does the HOPE grant/scholarship pay for full tuition or only a percentage of it? what all does it cover exactly?

Most first year dependent student gets Sub. Loans $3500 and Unsub. Loans $2000.

im classified as independent because Im homeless.

Can anybody help me?

^You need to contact your school:
Do the dual enrollment credits count toward the following 30 credit:
“Earn a 3.0 grade point average at the college level on degree coursework after attempting 30, 60, or 90 semester hours or 45, 90, or 135 quarter hours, regardless of high school graduation status.”

What state?

Yes my duel enrollment credit count and I’m in Georgia. I just want to know when they give out the HOPE if I would get it for spring semester of if they only give it out during the fall semesters. And if I get it during spring semester if I could cancel my Stafford loans for spring to have HOPE cover everything.

After you have the loans, you have 120 days to return it. See http://www.direct.ed.gov/dlplain.pdf

Thank you for answering that part of my question. I still need to know when I would get HOPE (in the spring or next fall 2015?) and what exactly the HOPE grant and scholarship cover.

anyone?

Are you a Georgia resident? Your question is pretty specific. Perhaps try posting it in the forum for a college in your state.

yes I mentioned already I live in georgia. they don’t have a forum for my college. clayton state university.

I do not see any forum for georgia colleges. where is it?

@lilzz18: Look here under ‘G’ to find some colleges in Georgia:

<a href=“College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/g/

Also, just call the financial aid office at your college to ask your question.

http://www.clayton.edu/financial-aid/Contact

You need to ask the person you were talking to about your financial aid. He/She seemed knowledgeable.

It may depend on the school and when/how they review financial aid. Some do it for the year, others will re-evaluate each semester. Federal is done for the year, but states can do whatever they like.

Dear Lilzz18,
First, big congratulations on graduating high school with 29 college credits with a great GPA! Quite an accomplishment. I am familiar with the GA Hope Scholarship and Stafford loans as I am helping my independent nephew who just started this summer at Georgia State.

As someone else clarified, you will be able to reject some or all of your student loans for any semester. What the school will do is ask you to accept the loans each semester (they split the loans in half, one half is awarded in fall and one half in spring), most likely on their online system. They will also split the Pell and HOPE, half in Fall and half in Spring. If you do need some of the loan money as you proceed even with HOPE (you need books, incidentals and you need a bit of emergency money), try to stick with the subsidized loans, as you probably already know that no interest accrues while you are in school, so you would owe exactly what you borrowed when you graduate. With the unsubsidized ones, interest will accrue the minute you take them, so you will owe more than you borrowed when you graduate on those unsubsidized ones. If you need the subsidized ones while you are in, take them (no one else will lend you money with 0% interest while you are in school) and just pay them back as soon as you can when you graduate. Just don’t waste the money, but it does not sound like you are that type of person. I am also wary of loans, but if you get a Bachelor’s degree in 2 years with just a bit of debt, you will be fine. If you struggle too much financially and have to take time off to work or something, you will just delay starting a good salary. Remember that you already owe nothing for the 1st 2 years, but do try to strike a balance to only borrow what you really need to get through.

As I understand it, HOPE has a “new” check they now do EVERY spring semester to maintain eligibility eligibility. You need to make sure you have a 3.0 at the end of every spring semester, as well as the semester you hit 30, 60 & 90 hours. One of my nephew’s advisors said they are making it harder that way to keep HOPE, so be smart, work hard and don’t lose this money that is there for the taking and like the Pell will never have to be paid back.

From the GACollege411.org website:
“any other student who was not academically eligible for the HOPE Scholarship as an entering college freshman may become eligible for the HOPE Scholarship after attempting 30, 60, or 90 semester hours or 45, 90, or 135 quarter hours of study with a 3.00 cumulative grade point average at the college level. The college or university you are attending will determine your eligibility after you have attempted the required hours, if the student meets all other eligibility requirements. HOPE Scholarship recipients transferring from one HOPE-eligible Georgia institution to another HOPE-eligible institution are eligible for HOPE funds if they continue to meet all of the eligibility requirements. All college degree credit hours attempted at any college, and the corresponding grades, are counted toward the HOPE cumulative grade point average, even if those hours and grades are not accepted by the institution to which the student transferred.”

You will hit 30 semester hours in Fall, so you should go directly to your Financial Aid Office when Fall grades are posted to make sure everything is in place for your HOPE award for Spring! Please never assume anyone will take care of it for you - follow up with them. You should also check with them yourself now. Just give them a call, but the rules say 30 hours college level hours attempted, and you already have 29. Good job in the turnaround.

Oh yeah, the HOPE is currently paying 80 something percent of tuition ONLY in GA (not any books or fees, which do add up), and the legislature can change the percentage every year. I looked up the payments at GACollege411and for fiscal year 2015 and at Clayton State they will pay $137.00 per semester hour you take ( $1,644 for 12 hours one semester, and $2,055 for 15 hours the next semester, for example). All of this will go to the school, and you will have to go in their system each semester to make sure they have it right and accept the loans you do need, unsubsidized first, of course, and then they will deposit any refund to you to be used for your other expenses. Best of luck to you!

Last thing - I think there is a limit of 127 semester hours for HOPE coverage overall, so make sure you take all of your required classes and work with your advisor on that. Just pester the advisors and financial aid office - it is their job to help you and I am sure they will be happy to do so. If you get a wacky answer, ask someone more senior and be persistent. You can also lose HOPE once in college and regain it back once (at the 30, 60 or 90 checkpoint), but that will NOT be you!

thank you so much I could not get anybody to answer this question for me. I really appreciate it.

No problem - best of luck. Keep up the good work and you will go far!
