Will I get a new roommate?

So I recently came back from winter break to find an empty room. My roomate moved out and let me know that he would not be coming back for spring semester. Classes start tomorrow and I was hoping for someone to move in. How likely would that be, or is it too late?

Someone could move in and there’s a rather high chance that they will. I went through a similar situation this semester and they filled the vacancy.

Thanks, I wasn’t sure because I assumed they would have been here already considering classes start this week.

It could be an international student who is still traveling. There is a possibility that you won’t get a roommate but I wouldn’t get your hopes up.

Note that even if you have a single at the start of the semester you will be expected to keep your stuff on your side of the room. Since you are paying for a double the college does retain the right to move someone into your room at any point. You may get a new roommate mid-semester if someone wants/needs a room change.

depends on your college. My school (small private school) has the policy that if the dorm is “filled” then you have to pay to keep the single. Since my school has a high transfer/ drop out rate and a low incoming rate you are almost guaranteed to keep the single if there is no one assigned to it. I have had 2.5 years of singles and never had to pay for it due to this policy.

At my school they play the date night game if the might need the other side of the room, ie the person having problems will get a list and have to contact the singles room to get a switch. So you would get notified if they need the room but unless you go to a huge state school you probably will keep the single for the semester.

I would keep your stuff on your side of the room for now (maybe another week or so) - too easy to get used to it being there. Nothing less annoying or unwelcoming for someone new moving in and seeing their side populated with your stuff.

Just reading on CC, you will see roommates having problems. Someone could move in at anytime. If you want a roommate for company, speak up. Personally, I enjoyed have a room to myself.

This happened to my friend’s daughter at American her freshman year. She did have a roommate arrive, an international student doing a semester abroad in DC, worked out fine
