Hi there, I am an international student and have been to the US for more than 4 years. I was enrolled into a four year college and I failed to meet the minimum GPA requirement and get dismissed from university. Then I transferred to a CC right after I received the academic dismissal notice. Now it has been two years and I get 3.6 GPA in CC(first semester 3.0 rest 3.8-3.9) with one semester overloaded up to 21 credits with GPA 3.88. And then i decided to transfer to a new four year university which ranked about 40 ish, I also upload my personal project since I am a computer science student. But get rejected from the admissions office, I’m just wondering whether it is true that I barely had a chance to get in and may I ask for some hints to boost my application in order to apply again in the future. With lots of thanks in advance.
You DO have a chance at getting accepted to a new 4-year college. However, it probably isn’t going to be a Top 40 college. It probably isn’t going to be a Top 100 college either. And you are probably not going to get any financial aid.
So with that in mind, I would take a new look at things. Take a look at some directional colleges (your academic advisor at your CC may have connections to a few of these), maybe some highly ranked regional colleges. You can absolutely get an excellent education at many of these places, but it isn’t going to come with a prestigious name on the diploma.
You need to be honest in admisstions too. Send your transcripts from both your first school (where you were dismissed) AND from the community college. There is a national clearinghouse colleges can use to check if you fail to report these things. If they find out about your dismissal from your first college from anyone else but you, you’re asking for a rejection. Be honest about your growth and newfound maturity. Explain you weren’t as ready as you thought you were after high school, but your high GPA now demonstrates how far you have come. Colleges will respect that and you will be more likely to get your second chance.
So it is pointless to apply for those universities other than waste of money right? And if i can graduate from a new 4-year college will the academic dismissal impact my graduate school admission? Will I be able to get in some selective universities at that time?
Well, if you do great in your last two years earning a bachelor’s degree, you’ll certainly be able to move up the ranks for grad school. How high will depend on your grades, GMAT or other score, and your professors’ letters of recommendation, etc.
