Will I get accepted into CalStates with Ds?

I am currently a senior and have applied to Cal States Fullerton and Long Beach. I also applied to Cal Poly Pomona. I did receive Ds in both of the first semesters of Geometry/Algebra I in my Freshman/Sophomore years.

After conferring with my counselor, she told me that since I passed both second semesters with a higher grade, the failing grade from the previous semesters would be overlooked.

My GPA last semester (2nd Sem. of Junior year) was thankfully a 4.1! My overall CSU/UC GPA is 3.59.

I have heard that Cal States do NOT accept any grades lower than a C?? Is this strictly true?

http://www.calstate.edu/counselors/preparing/ says that a C or higher grade in the second semester of a math course validates the first semester for the subject requirement, even if the first semester grade was a D or F. However, a D or F grade in 10th-11th grade still counts toward the GPA calculation, unless repeated for a higher grade.

CSU’s admit by eligibility index (EI) and major.
EI= (CSU GPA x800) + (SAT Math + EBRW). If you calculate your EI including your D grades from 10th grade, then you can get an idea if you are competitive for any of the CSU’s.

As stated in the above post, if you passed 2nd semester of the Math courses with a C or higher, your D grades are validated but they are included in your CSU GPA (10th only grade) if you did not retake.

If you get any D or F’s Senior year, then your acceptances could be in jeopardy since many of the impacted campuses will not accept anything lower than a C grade.

You recovered nicely from a rocky start in high school. Your chosen schools, especially Long Beach, could still proven difficult. I would have loved to see Chico or Stanislaus included on you list as they are much easier to land. Good Luck!

@stemteacher for most programs, Chico, Fullerton and CPP have similar admission thresholds and all CSUs have identical policies on their A-G requirements. CSULB is a bit more selective but, if the OP has calculated his CSU GPA correctly and has a 1150+ SAT, he will probably make it into all 3 schools.

My SAT was a 1070 (not the best, I know). I don’t know if course rigor and AP exams factor into the admissions process but I did get fours and fives on all my AP exams. Do you think this low SAT would lessen my chances at my three target schools?

that makes your Eligibility Index 3942 - which will put you on the bubble for the more competitive majors at CSULB - so it will depend on the strength of the applicant pool, I’d give it 60/40 in your favor. CPP and Fullerton should take you for virtually any major but nursing.
good luck

Course rigor is considered but AP test scores are not for admission decisions. Calculate your Eligibility index and see where you stand.
An EI of 3900+ for CSULB can be competitive. For CSU Fullerton and CPP, an EI of 3800+ can be competitive. Are these the only schools you applied? Are you local to any? No safety school?

SAT Breakdown and Intended major?
Senior grades not considered for admission decisions.
