Will I get any Aid?...

Quick question is in the last paragraph.
Now, Does texas A&M have good financial aid? And by good, I mean any financial aid for people who’s familes make more then 60k? Because with all the low amounts of merit aid I’m seeing from non-NMF, I’m starting to think you need a mix of merit and financial aid to have a chance at affording Texas A&M. I want to major in engineering (with a Mechanical or Civil engineering preference) but they don’t give out many departmental scholarships to freshman. So the majority of what I will be getting will be from the university.

Merit Stats
Rank Top 25%(should Improve), Sat (old) 1230(m + Cr), Sat (new / predicted) 1300+, ACT 30 (will retake and improve), 7 AP / IB classes every year of high school, 3.2 UW GPA 3.9 W GPA, and I’m an African america first generation immigrant if that helps.

My Clubs
Church youth group – founder / president (2010-present) and 1500 hours of community service
Academic Decathlon – President and winner in math, science, music, and economics (2013(or 2011 if you count lone star) -present)
Book / AVID Tutoring Club – President and Founder - specialize in English, Math, Science and music (2014-present)
Film making society – Officer and music composer (2014 – present)
Color Guard / Winter guard – (2014 (music Composer) and 2015(member) – present)
Technology Student Association (structural design) (2015-present)

Financial Stats
My EFC is a bit less then 5,000, I have a 95k family income and I will have 3 other siblings in college at the same time as me. If you want to read a bit more about my situation you can read this thread. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/19376471#Comment_19376471

I’m not looking for full COA, but at least enough to cover tuition would be nice. Do i seem like I will get much merit or financial aid? Do you think I may qualify for work study? Because I don’t want to get my hopes up for a school that I won’t be able to afford. I would prefer to hear from people with high family incomes and know their story. Thanks in advance.

Are you talking about merit scholarships or need aid. Need aid maybe merit probably not. In fact your stats are a little low for a&m engineering so will need to try to beef up your uw gpa and maybe a point or two on ACT wouldn’t hurt

I am talking about merit AND need aid. Do you think I could get some of both

@Ibebikz Thanks! I’m a Junior so I have time to improve my GPA, but I was about to settle on that ACT score. Thank you!

Merit aid for A&M is usually given to nation merit or very high stats. If you are looking for heavy aid and engineering consider UTD and U Houston along with A&M

@ibebikz I was actually thinking about UT-D. But I will want to do what ever it takes to have a chance at Merit aid at a&m.

Bump

Have you studied the scholarships offered by A&M on the Scholarships page? You can get a strong idea of the merit aid award amounts. They are competitive, so you’ll have to put time and effort into your application. If you can raise your ACT then that helps too of course.

@hmays1 I saw the scholarships on the page, but almost all of them say “some component of financial need” except academic achievement, corps, and top 10%. Do I have a component of financial need with an EFC of 5k?

2 more Questions!
1)I feel confident I can get my ACT up to a 32(maybe 33 if I stop studying the sat). Then would i have a chance with my horrible(25%) class rank?

  1. My school won’t update rank until November 24th(And i know I will improve a lot) and I’m not sure I want to turn in my application that late. Can I send in my application early and send in an updated transcript in November with an improved rank to improve my Merit Aid potential?

You do have financial need with an efc of 5k. Your financial need is COA-EFC so you should have about 18k of financial need.

@anthonys621 Ohh… Okay I get it. because I was seeing a lot of people on here saying they got nothing but maybe one or two merit scholarships. So i assumed if you weren’t getting Aggie Assurance you weren’t getting any financial aid.

Does TAMU give much financial aid?

“Do I have a component of financial need with an EFC of 5k?” => yes: financial need is COA - EFC, regardless of college. So for the meet-need college where COA is 65K, your financial need is 60K.
Run this for
TAMU
UTD
UH
Texas State
Texas Tech
Southwestern
Trinity

Compare the results.
Does TAMU’s net price look acceptable to you? Which universities have the cheapest net price? Which universities have the highest?

Now, try this

How do these compare with TAMU? With other universities in the list above?

@MYOS1634
Thanks for commenting on my thread again! But i’m curious if A&M in particular will try to meet my financial need. Not the rates that other schools have, but A&M. I am looking at other schools, but I’m curious to know if I would benefit from their financial aid.

Hm, spoonfed much? I actually gave you the link! All you have to do is click on it.
In any case you MUST check out TAMU against other schools. Fixating on one school isn’t a good idea. TAMU is a great school, so keep it at the top of your list, but you need to make a list, and the links after the one for Texas universities will help you cross out universities you can’t afford.

@MYOS1634
Oh no, I’m sorry it’s more that that college for all Texas net price calculator isn’t very accurate. So I was hoping to hear from people with similar Financial stats and Merit stats to know what they got.
But yes I am looking at other schools, but at the moment I’m curious about Texas A&M’s Fa to know if it’s even practical.i’m doing the same for Howard and Florida A&M students (since most of their aid seems to be merit-based) to see if they get good financial aid as well.

Amen. A&M’s net price calculator essentially spewed out a range $0-$20,000 for us. Since it wasn’t helpful, we assumed no financial aid when figuring TAMU costs.

Oh, I see.
Texas public universities tend to be very expensive, and state grants have been replaced by state loans, so :(.
Essentially, you won’t know more, I’m sorry. That’s why it’s very important for you to look at many different universities with merit aid as well as financial aid. I listed a few universities with good NPCs so that you can start seeing what you’re eligible for at what universities.
Look into Morehouse maybe, NCA&T? Howard and FAMU are very good choices indeed.

@MYOS1634 (Morehouse and NCA&T I hear don’t give much financial aid (or at least the people who come from my school don’t receive much)

its expensive on this CC a lot, but most of the people who say that are the families with high EFCs that get little merit aid. Because some how TAMU well known for being one of the most affordable engineering universities in America so I’m trying to find out how, and if it may be affordable to me. However it would be a darn shame if most low EFC families only take out loans from A&M to meet their high financial need :frowning:

Also before this question gets forgotten,

Can someone explain why A&M’s financial aid stats seem so good if they don’t give much aid?

https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/college-university-search/texas-am-university http://today.tamu.edu/2014/04/01/texas-am-among-top-4-public-universities-nationally-for-affordability-and-high-return-on-investment/

Do they mostly give loans? or are most of them NMF? or in the Corps Cadets or something?

I can speak on behalf of my best-friend. He had an EFC of 3900 and his income was around 97,000. He also had 2 siblings in university at the time of applying. He had over a 2000 SAT and a 31 ACT and got absolutely no merit based scholarships. He was rank 9/796 and had great essays and stuff. It’s very difficult to get merit based scholarships. He did receive some financial aid scholarships but it was not enough for him to go to Tamu. Most people I know who go there and make over 65,000 did not get much financial aid. Unless you’re a national merit finalist or Hispanic scholar you wont get much sorry :frowning: .

Thanks for sharing @justanotherjose ! I’m sorry for your friend and hopes he goes somewhere nice. Well I guess I’m not very likly go get much (if any) aid from A&M. Their goes that dream =((

I mean some of them (Friends who made over 65k) still went to Tamu. They took out loans but overall they don’t regret it. It’s all about your value of experience a main campus and the pride of being an Aggie.
