I just completed my fafsa and it says my EFC is 10000... Idk why it's so high as my mom makes 36000 and dad makes 28000. They have 2 kids in college. Why is this so high, and will I be able to get money with this EFC.

Do they also have assets?

If you can get into schools that meet full need, you should get substantial aid. Most schools don’t meet need however, so what you will get will vary greatly depending on the school and how much they want you.

Nope no assets just own a house, which isn’t an asset I believe.

Joe, having taken a quick look at your list, your EFC is unfortunately the least of your worries. You applied, with the exception of BC, to private colleges that don’t meet need and out of state publics. It would be very unlikely that these schools would want JUST your EFC.

Your in state publics will probably be your best bet, can you still apply to more SUNYs and maybe CUNYs?

At schools that meet 100% need, you would be able to get money up to whatever THEY calculate as your need, and that might not be the same thing as what the FAFSA tells you since those schools also use the CSS PROFILE and institutional forms.

Most schools don’t meet 100% need and regardless of what FAFSA tells you, they may offer you less. According to 2college2college, you’ve applied to a lot of those schools. You need to add some financial safeties to your list - if you live in NYS you have a LOT of great public universities to choose from in the CUNY and SUNY systems.

Well it’s not like I’m depending solely on financial aid. I am definitely going to take out loans and hopefully with the many outside scholarships I’ll get some good money. I was just wondering if I would get some money with this EFC, It’s not like I need my entire need met.

Joe…

you’re a little naive about how you’ll pay for college.

Outside scholarships are typically only for freshman year. That will leave you 'high and dry" for soph, junior, and senior years.

YOU can only borrow the following amounts

frosh 5500
soph 6500
jr 7500
sr 7500

To borrow more than that will require your parents to cosign. Most parents will NOT cosign because it obligates them. Your parents don’t make a lot of money, so it’s very unlikely that they will want to co-sign.

Plus, it’s a very BAD idea for undergrads to borrow much anyway.

What is your major?

how much do you think you’ll be earning once you graduate?

Joe, in your chances thread you show a 28 ACT and top 20%. while these stats are solid, they are not stats that will get you big merit aid at your list of schools or big outside scholarships.

With a $10K EFC, you will need to come up with over $40K for some schools on your list. Loans will cover $5500 the first Yeats, a little more if schools offer you a Perkins. Work study will cover a few thousand more. You’ll still need $30K above your EFC. Yet none of your schools other than BC, which is a significant reach, are likely to come close to meeting your need.

You need to look at the schools that meet 100% of need. There are a few where you’d have a shot.

Joe applied to 2 SUNYs - Binghamton and Stony Brook. I’d say SBU is a definite admission based on his stats and he has a decent chance at Binghamton too. There are only 2 other universities in the NY public system and it’s probably not necessary for him to apply to all 4. I would only question the logic behind SBU - are you local? Many kids post here that it’s a big commuter school and, given the other schools on your list, I sense that’s not what you’re looking for.

Mom2College - My major is biology and plan to go into wildlife biology and environmental science.

2college2college - I mean I applied to a couple of SUNY Schools and some of my schools like BU and Syracuse do meet need above 90%. And I think it’s a little too late to be applying to any more colleges, as I have already applied to 15 =P.

sk8rmom- Lol, yea I really want to dorm and try to get farther away. Even if I end up at Stony brook I know I’ll end up dorming regardless of the fact I live like an hour away. =P

Chances are you need could be met, but likely by a large PLUS loan. I would suggest that you continue your interest in your desired schools but also financial safeties that you would like to attend.

Joe, did you consider SUNY ESF in Syracuse? That seems like it would be a great fit and you’d also be on the SU campus and able to take some classes at SU if you wished. I know several kids at ESF who are very happy there…especially without the $53K SU bill!
