I am a current senior applying to Amherst College ED. I have a 33 ACT and a 3.6 GPA… I do attend a private boarding school with rigorous academics so this is low but somewhat good for the school I attend. I’ve taken five AP’s in high school and I want to major in Chinese studies in college. I’m also applying without FAFSA (I don’t know if this makes any difference seeing as Amherst is a need-blind school). I’ve been very involved in extracurriculars, from Class President to a residential advisor (RA) to Captain of the Varsity Golf team and head of an acapella group. Over the summer I worked as an EMT which is what I will be writing about in my personal statement. I love Amherst because of its diverse student population and amazing research opportunities, but what are my chances here?? THANK YOUU!!
That’s the million dollar question. No one knows the answer for sure, but what we do know is who has been admitted in recent history-
Also take a look on their website for Common Data Sets as well as a recent letter from President Martin that speaks to the accomplishments of the class of 2022
You sound like a good candidate. Applying anywhere ED is no joke, let alone one of the Little Ivies. Here are the numbers on Amherst, which I would say if you’re in love with Amherst, all signs point to go for it:
Amherst College 34% ED Acceptance 12% RD Acceptance 37% of Class filled ED 2.95 ED to RD Acceptance Ratio CDS 2017-2018
Now go write those essays so that they tell the story of you, the person they can’t possibly pass on
Academics are borderline low. Leadership is excellent. Strength of school will be known by Amherst. Chinese may be a hook if they need people in that major. They take a lot of student athletes with some crazy number playing a sport. So it is 9 out of 10 are not accepted. So just spread your options.
How did it go for you?
Chances for borderline low unhooked ED to AC are not good at all. Suggest back ups…
@waverlywizzard, this thread was from last admissions cycle.
