I am a soon-to-be senior with hopes of getting into Geneseo. I have a 1910/2400 or 1260/1600 SATs and a 3.5/4 or 89.4/100 gpa. My SATs seem to be where they should be but my gpa is a bit low.I have never taken an AP and My high school is extremely competitive. This is by far my first choice. How can I better my chances? Does it look like I will get accepted?

Make sure you are taking the most rigorous course load you can. Is there a particular reason you haven’t taken an AP? Any ECs? I’d say your SAT and GPA are in the right ballpark.

I have never been recommended for an AP. I’m trying to take AP Gov. next year. I have several clubs and a varsity sport for four years and tons of volunteer work. Do they look at those?

Yes, colleges take clubs, sports, and volunteer work into account. It looks particularly good to hold a leadership position or two.

Okay I hold two leadership positions in volunteer events. I hope a good essay will put me over the top. Thanks for the advice:)

@Ranza123 SUNY schools do not consider extracurricular activities.

@AnnieBeats really? I applied to a SUNY school and I was under the impression they considered my ECs, although I guess I could be wrong. I certainly mentioned them!

@Ranza123 Well, on the SUNY app, there is no space for them.

@AnnieBeats On collegeboard, most of the SUNYs (including Geneseo) list “extracurricular activities” under “important”

@Ranza123 Well I guess they aren’t that important if there is no space for them on the SUNY application.

@AnnieBeats I don’t know what to tell you! I didn’t use the SUNY application; I just used the Common App, which included space for ECs. If the SUNYs say they’re important, I wouldn’t downplay them.

@Ranza123 Oh right, I forgot that they used both. Well, I guess you can put it on the common app, but they wouldn’t penalize you if done through the SUNY app
