Will I get in? Please just read and help me out!

I am going to be a high school senior this next year and want to know my chances of getting into UCSB with a PHOTOGRAPHY/FINE ART major since it is my absolute dream school. Here is some information about me...

-I live in the silicon valley (Bay Area, California), and go to one of the most prestigious high schools in the bay area, Valley Christian High School. (look it up)

-My sophomore grades were not that good as I did not try that hard. I got a 3.14 GPA.

I am extremely involved in photography and have placed in top 3 in nation wide contest.

I took 2nd place in the Josten's Yearbook Company national photography contest.. my photo that took this is linked here:

I also took that photo into the Alliance for Your Artist & Writers contest and recieved a gold medal. Only like 1500 out of 20,000 got this award, and my photo was sent off to New York and recieved a silver award out of those 1500 or so placers.

My junior year I took all college prep courses (and got a 4.17 GPA) except for an AP 2D art class and recieved a 3 on the AP exam.

I also have had 3 jobs...

(1st)job was at a local wine shop where I sold wine to retired NHL players such as Wayne Gretsky!!!

(2nd) Second job was at Zumiez Skate Shop

(3rd) And my last and current job is working for a start up entrepenurial company that my best friends dad started for him to make money. Its called Gen-Y-Labz, and I research business data for it as a 17 year old.

I HAVE NEVER BEEN FIRED FROM A JOB

I am also a member of the Entrepreneur club at Valley Christian High School. The club is led by one of the most famous figures in venture capitalism Kevin Compton. He is also a 50% owner of the San Jose Sharks, and will be writing us recommendation letters.

I have no doubt in my mind that all of these things will set me apart from other fine art applicants, but feel that my sophomore grades will screw me over.

Summary:

3.65 average GPA, and i can get a 4.0 my first semester of senior year easily

3 outstanding jobs

Member of entrepreneur club and a very prestigious photographer for a high schooler

WHAT DO YOU THINK? WHAT ARE MY CHANCES OF GETTING IN?

SATs?
senior grades dont matter much
i say u got a moderate chance

I took the SAT a couple of months ago and got a 1550 my first try after cutting SAT class every morning because I was tired. But I plan on studying this summer to improve. I can get anywhere from a 1750-1850 after studying this summer. I also have really bad anxiety that comes out its worst during tests so thats why my grades are good but I might not do as well on the SAT as my grades reflect. So if I can get a 1750-1850 what would you say my chances are?

Your GPA and test scores are low for UCSB but it kind of depends on your high school and if you took AP classes or not. What is the top GPA at your high school? Also you may not want to go to UCSB because UCSB does not have program in photography. It is not known for the ARTs so if I were you I would look into another school that fits your interests. Cal Poly may be a a better fit and depending on your major you may have a shot at admissions with your GPA and test scores.

Senior year grades are pretty much worthless. They dont ask for them till after you’re admitted. Your sophomore year might be a problem and the fact that you went to a prestigious high school might make it worse. You compete directly with applicants from your school. Your SATs are very low. You should probably be looking around 1900+. The higher your score, the more it will make up for your gpa. Your junior year is solid. I don’t know if you have volunteer hours but those could help. It’s definitely possible. You may want to write one of your essay on your sophomore year grades and why you had the turn around if it will raise your chances. Don’t be too surprised if you don’t get in. But your major will definitely make it easier. At this point the best thing you can do is study your ass off for the SATs.

I beg to differ. If UCSB has a major in photography, even though it is bundled with “fine arts”, then I wouldn’t necessarily dismiss the program as “nonexistent” in UCSB.

connor, try to get hold of some of the fine arts professors/photography professors here. I know for a fact UCSB has a (very little-known among the general pop.) photo studio, darkroom, and a couple of classes of photography. . .
