Will I Get In to Suny New Paltz?

I am going into my senior year of high school. I got a 1760 on my SAT first shot (I will be retaking it in the fall and I'm shooting for a 2000) and have a weighted GPA of 87. I played 3 varsity sports, Cross Country, Wrestling, Baseball. Baseball is my best sport and would like to play baseball at New Paltz. I hit .406 this year on varsity (just thought i should say. lol). Do you think I can get into New Paltz with my GPA. It kind of took a hit this year as I was sucking too much weight for wrestling. it looks like a good fit for a school and the cost is great for my parents. I made a couple bad decisions this year putting sports ahead of studying but I hope i just missed shooting myself in the foot.

New Paltz is very skewed with male to female ratio, so being male should help. What was the breakdown on your SAT? Your gpa may be in the low end of the range. Have you contacted the baseball coach at NP? Might help.

the breakdown for my SAT score was 620 critical reading, 620 writing, and 520 math. This time around I’m looking to get a 720 critical reading, 620 math, 720 writing raising each score by 100 (I’m taking Test Takers which should help). .I looked on their website and it say’s to fill out a questionnaire that will be sent to the coach. Is that the best way to contact the coach or is there another way?

I think you will be fine if you raise your Math score a bit, your other two sections are fine for NP! Don’t know much about athletic recruiting sorry!

Holliesue is right, with the ratio male/female you have an advantage. I think if you work on your SAT and GPA this semester you have a good chance. Also, I would recommend visiting to show interest. It is a great school! My D is entering her SR year and has had a great time, had excellent opportunities and top notch teachers. Her only complaint was the food! Best of luck.

Hard to say…

NP uses your core subjects to determine admission…keep this in mind. SAT is low.

I agree that as a male that helps…and athletics is a plus too.

Demand is high as you know…I think it is a bit of a reach at this point.

Good luck!

What about Oneonta: do you think I have a better shot of getting in there?

^Match your stats up against the info in the Common Data Set in the link.

Thank you, that was very helpful. Do you have that for Oneonta as well?

[Office of Admissions](<a href=“Home | SUNY Oneonta”>Home | SUNY Oneonta)
^I couldn’t find their Common Data Set but here is some info on the Freshman Profile.

They had an acceptance rate of 38% for 2010.

I see the average for admitted students was a 90.4 GPA. Since I have an 87 do I even have a shot at getting in Oneonta? and be honest with me, don’t sugar coat anything.

Average Candidate to Oneonta:

Grade Point Average: 90.4 Cumulative Average
SAT 1: 1137 (Math & Critical Reading only)

What is your Math & CR combined score?

What is the rigor of your curriculum? How many years of science/math/foreign language?
How many AP classes did you take?

The GPA of 90.4------some will be above that mark, some will be a little below that mark. An 87 isn’t far off.

As long as your rigor is decent and your Math/CR is better than 1137, you should apply.

Sat: 1140 (retaking it in the fall after taking a class and studying hard) 520 math, 620 critical reading. I’ve taken all four years of math, science, Latin. I have only taken 1 AP class, AP Euro, I took honors Latin this year but other than that I have taken all regular classes. What are my chances and is there anything I can now do to improve them? I heard the first two quarters of senior year are pretty important. (sry about the delay i forgot to post it)

I recommend that you register for the first ACT test in the fall (I think there’s one in Sept.).
Both of my son’s performed much better on the ACT test as opposed to the SAT test.

<a href=“The ACT Test for Students | ACT”>The ACT Test for Students | ACT;

In the Fall, retake the SAT and try the ACT (register online–deadline to register for the Sept. 2010 ACT test in August 6th). Don’t rule out Oneonta–think of it as a Low Reach school.

Will having an A average in the first 2 semesters of Senior year help with admissions?

As I understand it, your transcript through Junior year is what will be evaluated for admission. Your Midterm grades and your Final transcript are reviewed to ensure that an applicant has maintained their grades and rigor.

I am pretty sure you will get in, if not you will 100% get into Oneonta.

If the baseball coach is interested in having you on the team I think that could provide the tip you need to for admission. You already have a decent shot based on your academic performance and standardized test scores. New Paltz has become much more selective over the past several years but if you have something special to offer, which in your case MIGHT be baseball, that can factor heavily in your favor even if your GPA, strength of schedule and test scores are below the 25th percentile. Have you been in touch with the coach yet to make him aware of your interest in New Paltz?

I haven’t contacted him yet but I plan to within the coming weeks. When I visit I’m going to contact the AD’s office and see if I can talk to him cause I don’t really know how else to contact him. right now my top 3 are probably

 1. Plattsburgh
 2. Fredonia
 3. New Paltz

because of my grades. I’ve heard good things about fredonia and Plattsburgh. Do you think that these schools are reasonable considering my grades?
