You might try to get some advice on your essay topic. Sports essays are overused.

ED at penn sounds like a good idea right now. a bunch of people from my school got in early that said if they applied regular they don't know if they would have got in. i'm gonna visit their and talk to a couple more people and see. if i don't get on, oh well. thanks everybody.

hey thanks. i never thought princeton would be a shot for me. maybe i'll consider changing my essay topic. thanks ricegal.

hey you think i have a better chance at getting into duke than princeton? i'd love to go to either one but i just assumed it would be harder to get into duke. a lot of really good students get turned down from duke everywhere. and they're not big on affirmative action either.

Pomona might be more of a slight reach, with acceptance rate 15.8% this year. My D has identical 2200 SAT, but is valedictorian and 2 sport captain. Was rejected at H,Y,Amherst, waitlist-rejected at Williams, waitlist-accepted at WUStL, and accepted to Vandy, UVa, and Pomona. Will be attending Pomona. Not URM, though. Don't know how much that might help.

Well Princeton has a lower acceptance rate than Duke, but if Duke isn't big on AA, I guess it could be easier?

I still think that ED at Penn seems like a really good idea (if it is truly one of your top choices). You would certainly have a shot at Princeton or Duke, though.

2200 and got rejected at harvard and yale? that's not too surprising, but pomona's a good school she should be happy there.
i'm gonna visit penn this summer and see then if it's really my first choice. i'm gonna apply early to either penn, duke, northwestern, or washu. i can't decide which one is my top choice right now, and i think if i apply ED it'll greatly improve my odds because not a lot of URM's apply early with the scores i have.
my college advisor also added boston college and dartmouth to my list today. any opinions on my chances there?

BC...great chance, Dartmouth...good chance as well.

If you have a top choice, ED is great. I wish I could have applied ED, but I was too indecisive. You would have a great chance at either Northwestern or WashU ED, and a good chance at the other two, as well.

where did you end up going and what do u wish you had done differently?
i also noticed that none of my schools have EA. all of them are ED. i'd like to have some safety schools that are early action just so i dont freak out if i dont get into my ED school. any ideas of quality schools that are EA? i think UNC is EA.

I'd say you have great chances at all schools mentioned. Your resume is good all-around. And as far as being a URM goes, this helps even more at the schools on the top of the charts, who are just begging for intelligent URMs to come. If finances aren't an issue, choose a favorite and apply ED. Otherwise, apply to all. I obviously can't guarantee, but feel strongly that, you will get into at least one top school (Duke, Pomona, Dartmouth, Penn, etc).

Success and disappointment don't help anyone at all in reality, in my opinion. They may serve as morale boosters, though, but nothing more.
Nobody really knows what your chances are. Hope for the best, expect the worst. And everyone will be waiting to see how it goes for you. Good luck.

yeah see that's the thing. right now finances ARE an issue. i would love to apply early to duke because i've wanted to go there since i was little, but i heard they don't give much in the way of financial aid. i'm gonna apply to a lot of small scholarships on the side though ($1000's or so). i heard washU gives some merit scholarships, and i'd really love to go there. probably just end up applying regular to duke, pomona, dartmouth, and see what happens from there.

I'm going to Wellesley, a great school. My biggest wish, which I had absolutely no control over, is that Princeton had gotten rid of ED a year earlier...I am a double legacy there, and when I couldn't commit ED, I was basically out in the cold (ED acceptance rate = 25% + legacy advantage, RD acceptance rate = 7%, very little or no legacy advantage). I got rejected RD there and at Yale, and waitlisted at Brown and Columbia. Also, I might have applied ED to Columbia if I had more nerve...I just really wanted to pick a school in April and was worried about making the wrong choice ED. However, I had relatively weak ecs and am an upper middle class caucasian girl--a very overrepresented majority :).

But, I got into every other school I applied to, including two top LACs and two extremely popular schools (BC and NYU) with $ and/or Honors Program distinctions, and a strong safety school with a large ($27,000/yr) scholarship. So I didn't do too bad :).

BTW, BC has EA. Off the top of my head, some highly selective schools that have non-restrictive EA include UChicago, MIT, and Rice (I believe). Schools with restricted EA would be Stanford and Yale (where I applied EA), but a) you can only apply there early and b) I really don't think it is an advantage, maybe unless you are a legacy.

Hope that helps.

Quote:i can't decide which one is my top choice right now, and i think if i apply ED it'll greatly improve my odds because not a lot of URM's apply early with the scores i have.

And not many can afford to apply ED either at the selective schools on your list! You are in an enviable position. Best wishes with your search. Keep us posted.

the only place i'm a legacy is grinnell, and i wouldn't go there if they paid me. i heard that's where fun goes to die. things turned are GREAT for you. wellesley...that's a LAC right? i've heard good things about it.
hey thanks but i'm not really looking at any of those right now except BC. stanford and yale just dont seem like my cup of tea.
hopefully being a low-income URM will help me get into a great school like duke or penn. whatever i'm not worried. you guys have been great.

Yeah, WashU's aid policy is funny. I've heard many stories of people getting admitted and receiving 0 aid, and yet they say they'll meet your need. I was also in that exact situation, plus their merit scholarship are very competitive.

Nice story:), but still...

yeah i don't no if i can afford it either. i'm afraid of applying early to duke or penn, getting in, and being stuck w/ a crappy FA offer. i heard northwestern and washU are more generous in that department so we'll see.
i feel really lucky. i know a lot of black kids that wish they were in my position w/ my resume and test scores. i'll be sure to keep you guys posted on whatever happens for me. wish me luck.

But I think you can pull out of the ED bond if the aid is not sufficient?

oh really? 0 aid? wow well if that's true that changes a lot. i'll talk to my college advisor and my parents and see what they say. w/ my parents income though, i'm sure i'll get some if not a lot of needbased scholarship from everywhere.

yeah i've heard that if the FA isn't enough you can pull out ED. again, i would need to talk to my college counselor about that. he knows all that stuff.
