Hi guys, I'm interested in miami and am wondering if I have a good shot. Im out of state (Illinois) and attend the #1 ranked public high school in the state. My gpa is a 3.0 unweighted, (im in all honors courses), and my act is 32. Im active in varsity sports and community service with church. Do I have a decent shot?

Ooooohhhhh…there is a disconnect here between your GPA and your ACT score. Why is your GPA so low compared to your ACT? Do you have extenuating circumstances? I think that unless you do, the GPA may be a problem for Miami of Ohio, especially since you are OOS. But then again your ACT is way above range for them. Good luck. I hope you get in! :)

Miami draws heavily from the Chicago area. They have one AC dedicated to Illinois - so I am quite sure they are aware of which schools are held is high regard. As a result, they should be familiar with the classes offered and the quality of the top schools - especially yours.

The trick with your stats is that the 3.0 is unweighted - when you are taking full honors. When we visited Oxford in August, the AC stressed that they look at the difficulty of the courses and said that they encourage you to take honors/AP classes - and will take that into consideration. I don’t know if Miami recalculates a weighted GPA or if your school will show both weighted and unweighted on the transcript - but it is considered.

My S goes to a public HS in that is always ranked in the top 10 -15 in Illinois and always sends students to Miami. Naviance for his school shows that there were kids accepted with stats similar to yours. With a 32 ACT - the vast majority of students were accepted. That said, I have no idea what the quality of this years class of applicants is. Good luck!

You are fine and will get in. Miami really is not difficult to get into.
