Hey, I'm about to send out my applications for college and am wondering if I'll be able to get in UMN. I'm looking at the Chemical Engineering department (wonder why) and I was very happy when I saw the OOS price for the school, considering I'm from NJ. I really would like to go there because I'll get a great education for a college cheaper than my own in-state school with Chemical Engineering (Rutgers). How do my credentials look?

Honors/AP classes throughout highschool;
-Honors Geometry
-Honors Algebra 2
-Honors Precalc (this includes trig and discrete mathematics)
-AP Calc AB (currently in the class and plan on taking AP test)
-Honors Biology
-AP Chemistry (3 on the AP test, sadly it was because I had a narcissistic teacher)
-AP Physics AB (currently in the class and plan on taking AP test)
-Honors US History 1
-Honors US History 2 (they split them up at my school)
-Honors World Cultures (the AP version isn't offered)
-Honors Italian 3 (1 & 2 are not offered as honors)
-Honors Computer Programming 2 (java) (the AP version isn't offered)
-I only have 3 years of Honors Science because my mom made me take level 2 first year Chemistry sophmore year because she thought Honors would be too hard. I got a 99%...
-And I also took music classes frosh-junior year, they cancelled Honors Music Theory 2 otherwise it would've been all 4

Unweighted GPA: 3.62 out of 4
Weighted GPA: 4.94 out of 6
Class Rank: 14%
(these numbers subject to change because I have teachers who can actually teach me something this year, hoping to get to a 3.65, 5.1 and top 10%)

EC's in and out of school:
Varsity Tennis all four years (haven't played senior year yet obviously. won sectionals sophmore and junior year)
Cross Country frosh/soph
Math Tutoring Senior year (in school function/volunteer work)
YMCA lifeguard/swim instructor
Volunteer Ski Instructor at Belleayre Mountain Ski Resort

If you want any other info to help, I'll tell you whatever, but I think I covered all the odd spots.

No, sorry. But my best friend ever does. Her stats were pretty much identical to yours, and she not only got accepted but was offered merit scholarships.

Yeah I know it’s really high up there, but I’m not sure if I’m gonna do ChemE anymore. I put undecided on my app. I may choose Mechanical Engineering instead and they’re like 17

Is this helping my cause right now??? Straight A’s in my senior year, which has 2 AP’s and 3 Honors(2 are AP at other schools but aren’t AP at mine, they teach them in a different way), including a 96 in AP Physics and AP Calc. Oh and I put down Undecided in the engineering instead of Chemical, cause I’m thinking (and probably will) switch to mechanical.

Upward trends always help, but I think Nomad has it about right … definitely not an “easy in”. You are in the bottom third for both their class rank and SAT range.

I’m retaking the SAT’s tomorrow, and I’m not in the bottom third for that. Right in the middle (they only count M and CR, and their 50% is a 1250, and that’s my score. Hoping to get a 1320+) and my school is really competitive, most of our top 10% are going to ivy’s and their counterparts. A kid that wasn’t in the top 10% last year went to swarthmore. I think he was like top 25% ish

Oh, didn’t notice that. Well I’m retaking them tomorrow and as long as I can stay concentrated i’ll have over a 1300. I also applied to the CLA-Physics just as a backup and my numbers are fine for that. If i don’t get in the engineering the first year I’ll do CLA, work hard as hell, then go into CSE in the second year. Most schools are 5 years programs anyway, I can’t get away from that

And you also have to factor in that minnesota is used as a backup (even though it’s not a backup for me) for kids that want to go to northwestern/u michigan and stuff like that. So out of the 65% with over a 1300, probably like 40% of the 65% actually go to the school. But more of the 33% probably go there because it’s more likely that it’s their most desirable school. So even if i unluckily end up with a 1290, i won’t be in the crapshoot

just as a means of comparison, i got into chemE with top 8% rank, 31 ACT, and 1 leadership position as a senior in band (did band all 4 years). i think you’re guaranteed into uminnesota, but chemE you’ll either get in or start off undeclared and have to transfer in. best of luck to you!

Thanks dude I think I’m doing mechanical or materials now but I have a comparison. My sat is just being brought down by reading but for engineering that cant be an overwhelming factor

oh man, i know exactly what you mean. my sat score was a 760 math and 520 reading, thats why i just sent my 31 ACT instead (the science section really helped me, and thankfully, i don’t think the individual sections are reported, so my 24 reading was unmentioned)
