Will I get into any of these as a transfer?

Schools I am applying to:
Upenn
Villanova
NYU
Georgetown
Cornell
Brown
Columbia (have a legacy here)
Harvard
Yale

College: Penn State (honors)
Major: Economics
Minor: Spanish
College GPA: 3.7
Semester 1: 3.68
Semester 2: 3.75
Semester 3 Prediction: 4.0 (I am taking 19.5 credits as well. I have A’s in all my classes, my advisor told me I was “dominating”

Summer Semester: Took one class and got a C. My advisor at the time misadvised me and I ended up not needing the class. I was a part time intern at two companies at the time and it was too much. I will explain the C in my essays and take responsibility for my misjudgment. It really sucks because without it after this semester I would be in the 3.85-3.9 ranges.

Internships:
1. Intern at psychology work-study program 4 consecutive summers that worked with juveniles. I was the supervisor of college interns when I was a high school student. Was in charge of managing the whole thing and contacting where the juveniles could volunteer.

Intern at Mortgage Company (assistant loan officer and financial consultant)

Intern at Renewable Energy Business. Focuses on improving commodities to reduce Co2 production and to make use of byproducts produced by unsustainable
practices.

Intern at investment bank(economic analyst)

Interning at Santander Bank next summer( most likely in Madrid if everything works) and possibly doing summer research program at Upenn.

Economics Research on unemployment Spring Semester Sophomore year (next semester) it is a requirement for Honors Macroeconomics. We all have to present our research at a research conference as well as travel to Washington D.C. where we will be given a presentation by the Federal Bureau of Statistics. (Research may be published its too early to tell)

Economics Research on Global Health Spring Semester. It is a requirement for Honors Effective Speech We are traveling to South Africa over Spring Break as part of the class requirement. We will be working with non-profit orgs to help locals as well as learn about the health initiatives in the country. The trip also counts as a college credit, which will be on my transcript (this may be published as well but once again haven’t even started the class yet)

4.President and founder of The Penn State Economics and Business Society

6. Advisor on the budget and finance committee for the student government association.

500+ hours volunteering through the Salvation Army, habitat for humanity, relay for life, working at state parks, and coaching youth baseball.
8.Baseball player, could have played D1 but chose not to so I could focus on academics. However, I am willing to play again if I can gain admissions into a few of the schools.(particularly the ivies) I plan to contact the coaches of Upenn, Harvard, Yale, Brown, Cornell, and Columbia.
9.Excellent Piano Player and musician

Recommendations:
2 Excellent Recommendations from very close professors(one I am doing research with, he said I was one of the most driven students he has ever encountered, the other I am exceptionally close with and is determined to help me transfer to a good school. He is really sad to see me leave PSU)

1 Strong Recommendation from honors coordinator (she is the one helping me with my whole transfer process as well as my applications, she is incredibily intelligent and an English PHD so this one may be the best written)

1 Strong Recommendation from Admissions Dean(she is helping me with transferring as well. She holds a highly ranked position and is well respected by the PSU community and by other institutions as well.)

Awards(post high school): Deans list award (twice)
Penn State Superior Academic Achievement Award (twice)
Penn State honors acceptance after freshman year and penn state honors society acceptance
Bacculuraute of research award
Valedictorian of my major thus far

No Financial Aid Needed
Both parents are college grads

Hey Jake,

Looks like a glow-in-the-dark application to me. You have great grades for honors courses and fantastic extra-curriculars. I’m not going to sugar coat it, because I want you to know the truth – I don’t want you to have afalse sense of hope. I don’t know how it is in college, but the only thing I see wrong is no sports. Perhaps sports in college is different from that in high-school, and if so, sorry for calling this out, and maybe you just forgot to add them onto the list, but from what I’ve heard, sports and physical activity are important as well.

Other than that, you look like a raindrop student – well rounded at the base, and pointy at the top!!! If you don’t get the analogy, I’d be happy to explain it to you, but you probably know.

Considering the schools:
All of them except for Harvard and Yale (reaches) I’d say. Columbia might be a backup for you!

Good work! and good luck!!!

Matt

I play baseball, forgot to put that in here. I could have played division 1 but chose not to. It would not take me long to get back into the swing of things and I have gained about 30 ibs of muscle since college started  should help my hitting and arm velocity. The schools that were looking at me were lower tier division 1 schools however I feel like if I trained hard this winter I could easily play at any of the schools listed above. Thanks for the awesome response I really appreciate it!

You cant get in

@darthvader2 Is this sarcastic or serious haha because I would appreciate some criticism rather than just saying that. In other words what I can improve on besides GPA and things of that sort.

Take gpa higher

Okay. Also I have been told by many that anything above a 3.5 is good enough in college for the non ivies. A 3.7 seems competitive enough for penn and cornell though for transfer but I could be wrong. I am trying to get that C off my transcript as I was told to take it when I didnt need and it impacted my gpa terribly. I spent ALOT of money to take that class I didnt need and I was also very sick at the time and working two jobs. There has to be a way haha. Also given that I have pretty good ECs I think and am heavily involved outside the classroom they should over look the average gpa

A 3.7 GPA is very good! The average GPA at Cornell is 3.4 so you are in very good shape. Don’t stress about that C. You are qualified for all these schools and after some explanations, you will be fine.

@Bound4Harvard Awesome news, also what do you think my chances for penn are? not wharton just CAS. my boss at the investment company I interned for is a wharton MBA grad and I am getting a letter of rec from him. do you think this will have a good impact on the admissions decision?

Penn st and Villanova

With a letter from a UPenn Wharton grad (the most competitive school at UPenn), your already good chances can only be bolstered. Aside from the more competitive Ivies (reaches for anyone), you look to have favorable stats for all of the other colleges.

@bri2020 Penn st and Villanova? I am not sure what you are talking about…

@IlikePi314 awesome news Penn is my #1 choice getting in there would make me cry

Good chance for all. Not going to lie - I don’t know a ton about these schools as I’m not applying to any myself, but you seem competitive at all. Where do you attend now? GPA really is contingent on school difficulty. A 3.4 at Cornell (someone else’s example) is stellar, considering Cornell is easily the hardest ivy league (not the most prestigious, just the hardest to get a good GPA in with their grade deflation). On the other hand a 3.7 at any school that isn’t T20 or T30 isn’t a huge standout for a place like UPenn. I doubt you’ll get that C off your transcript if you already took the class, but good luck! You seem like you stand a fair shot at quite a few of these.

I go to Penn State(ranked 37 in the nation) but I am in the honors college and the selectivity of the honors college at PSU is often compared to that of top 15 schools. Due to being in the honors college my class rigor is also on par with that of very intense curriculums so I think I should be fine hopefully. Thanks for your input!

I have no idea about transfers sorry

Its okay not everyone does haha

Yes , I agree you look in a good shape. Your top choice is UPenn , also consider Columbia University , New York is Awesome . I went there last year.

Awesome! I have been there several times as I live in the philly suburbs(only a 2-3 hour drive) my cousin also goes to Columbia as well for his MBA right now I could move in with him if I had to haha
