Umm...Cal is also in-state the last time I checked. I may be wrong about that, however. You may want to verify that Berkeley, CA is in fact in California. Very interesting problem we may face.

Barring Berkeley's moving to, oh I dunno, Idaho, you're still in good shape for Cal.

LOLLL thanks for the witty sarcasm. No, my counselor said i dont have a godo shot at Cal which is why i didnt mention it. I wa sonly speaking on the 3 schools i felt like i had legit shots at, and i was lil scared haering Tufts will also be hard for me

Unless you are secretly applying to engineering at Cal and not UCLA, the numbers are almost exact. In order to back-up this claim, I could go and get the exact numbers, but instead I'll just say that both Cal and UCLA had an average 4.26 weighted GPA (exactly the same), and the SAT I was around 2000 or so.

Far be it for me to doubt the wisdom of a high school counselor in anything-- because we all know that those that can do become counselors...and not real people-- but your counselor is nuts. You have as good a shot at Cal as UCLA.

I know this to be true because the student bodies are almost exactly the same. This is, of course, barring that you managed to kill a dean at Cal or are on a persona non grata list there.

All joking aside, you're doing fine. You may just may have to make the hard choice between Cal and UCLA in the future.

Even if that is true, it doesn't make it right. A brief analysis of the schools' admitted students demonstrates that they admit alike students. GPA is in the 4.0-4.3 range, SAT is in the 2000 range.

UCLA hasn't been "easier" to get into for almost a decade.

yeah it is just statistically they take fewer students in lower ranges which is bad for me; but to be frank, id choose UCLA over cal becuase of location. i mean the order of schools if i got into them all would prolbably be Cornell, UCLA, U mich, Tufts, Cal, Wesleyan. but, knowing getting into them all would probably be close to none, ill be happy and feel blessed if i got into any of these schools.

Average GPA: 4.26
Average SAT: 2000 (by section this breaks down into about the same as Cal, but it's too many numbers to list here effectively)

The 50th percentile range at both UCLA and Cal is virtually identical. And this is not because of funny outliers or weights at the 25th and 75th quartiles.

well, either way, i get kicked in the ass. my 3.8 weighted UC gpa is .46 below each one and seeing its a point system UC's use im down what, 400 points ? LOL not a pretty sight, its actaully incredibly scary.

Only UCSD uses a point system. So you're in the clear there.

Around 10% of admitted UCLA students had around 3.8 GPAs last year. However, I doubt that most of them had the strong SAT score that you had. Using UCLA as a proxy for Cal (which is more than reasonable), we can say that you have a good shot at both. Remember that your excellent SAT scores will draw attention away from your GPA.

well, what im assuming is ill be put into the maybe pile since my SAT 1 is decent but my GPA sucks ___________. So im just hoping my microsoft internship and my essay about my experience there will be the tipping point. btw my essays were the favorite portion of my application : )

uclari
cal is harder to get into than la, there are other factors considered besides sat/gpa averages. and cal is alot better than la in terms of both academics and social life.
