Dear Sarthak314 : Your post raised some interesting points for the College Confidential Boston College board readers to consider; these are comments directed towards you specifically, but useful for others.

As jpm50’s statistical measures show, your 1820 three-way SAT is basically at the “zero-th” percentile in the accepted class profile. Basically, this measure implies that you are right now outside of the consideration zone despite everything else in your profile. So, before we even offer more advice, you have to get your SAT score into a reasonably acceptable range. We also strongly suggest considering the ACT which might leverage your SAT II ability demonstrated by your history exam.

A 3.96 weighted sounds fine, but if your unweighted GPA is in the 3.5-3.6 range, you are leveraging a B+/A- average to get into a university where 85% of accepted undergraduates at in the Top 10% of their high school class; 96% are in the Top 25%. Next, it is unclear whether your average has been achieved in the top academic classes offered by your high school. Personally, I hate reading student profiles that suggest a private school is “tougher”; BC is not looking to evaluate your school but rather you as an individual.

From your extra-cirriculars, I see three years of track (one season) from a three sports season year. What else was involved here? Any leadership/captain roles? How about additional club positions? Honor societies? School volunteerism?

This brings us to your 800+ hours of community service. Without further visibility here, it is difficult to assess this line item in your profile, but this is an intangible to be exploited.

Finally, why take 7 AP classes? Many reasons. First, it is to expand your knowledge as a High School senior, keeping you in touch with tougher subject areas. Second, an AP or IB curriculum typically better prepares you for the rigors of college academics. Third, even if not at Boston College, these courses with successful AP exam scores could save you costs or credits to complete your undergraduate degree.

So, what is the final verdict? Right now, you feel like a rejection or deferral based on the SAT I score. Change the game and take the ACT as it feels like you might be a 30-31 range student there which would put your Board Scores in the middle of the BC accepted class. Next, get to thinking about your school activities and show how they make an impact on the scholastic community. Third, try to define the impact of your community service in more specific detail. Finally and most importantly, start thinking about your essay that answers a very simple question : Why do you make BC a better place by being an accepted student?

Good luck!
