So I am a sixteen year old junior at a good public high school in washington. I really want to go to Emory, Georgetown or Claremont McKenna but I know they are really competitive schools and i was wondering my chances.
I have a 4.0 cumulitive GPA (unweighted) and at my school anyone who ends with a 4.0 is a valedictorian so I am going to be valedictorian next year.

I have taken:
1 year of honors sophmore english
1 year of honors American history and literature
AP Gov- 5 on the exam
AP Bio- not sure but I'm guessing a 4

Next year i am going to take:
AP Lit
AP European History
AP Statistics
AP Spanish
Physics
World Religions

I am not a particularly good tester and have not performed great on the SATs. I am trying to raise them but I don't know how high I can realistically make them. I am a really hard worker which usually makes up for the scores...
690 CR
660 Math
660 Writing (2010 total)
Subject Tests:
730 Biology
680 American History
and I think I am going to take the Spanish or Lit one

I have played soccer all four years in high school 1 JV, 3 Varsity and have played select soccer the entire time as well
I have played JV tennis 2 years and varsity tennis 2 years
NHS 3 years, President next year
I volunteer at the boys and girls club once a week for two hours
I have worked on the school newspaper for three years. Section editor next year
I have taken three years of photography- 2 select awards in the state show and a 2nd place at a school art show
I have spent 6 weeks in Kisumu Kenya, where I lived with a Kenyan family on a communal farm/dairy and worked and went to school with the kids. While in the US, I am still connected to Kenya by facilitiating the relationship between sponsors and the girls they are sponsoring to go to school in Kenya. I also have organized various car washes and fundraisers for the farm.

Theres some other things, but I can't really think of them right now...but tell me what you think, I would really like to know! Thanks!

I think your resume is impressive, but I’m concerned with the SAT scores. That are, unfortunately, subpar my friend. I am also curious as to how many AP tests you will be submitting to the college on your resume next fall?

I’d also like to note that you cannot claim you are varsity on a sport you have not played yet on your resume–tennis, which is a spring sport here, would not count senior year on my resume, for example, if I was varsity then.

I would also like to note that being varsity isn’t much of an EC–it’s simply not, unless you’re being recruited for the sport.

The Kenya advantage you have on the resume is quite good–I think that’s your cutting edge. But why don’t you have any sort of academic extra curricular?

I agree with RedCatharsis. If you can get your SAT’s up a good 100-150 pts you will be really competitive. Right now I would say they Georgetown and Mckenna are high reaches and Emory is just a reach.

Yeah the SAT scores are weighing me down…
I should have realized about the tennis thing, thanks for letting me know! My academic extracurricular is newspaper, and NHS which I will be president of next year. I know I should probably get some more…I will only be submitting 2 APs next year on my fall resume (at my school your not allowed to take APs until junior year and the max you can take is two…weird i know) and I will be taking 3 senior year.
Thanks for the advice!

I think that you look like a strong candidate for all three, but your SAT scores are really tolo ow…sorry, I hope that you can raise them. You sound like you have a strong drive and I wish you the best! Maybe try the ACT?

4.0 valadictorian…definately in at emory. your SAT scores are barely below their average and your grades make up for it. the other two are reaches.

I doubt anyone is going to get this but I have some updated info…
my best SATs are now
730 CR, 660 Math, 720 Writing
ACT composite 31
SAT II Bio 730, Am. History 720, Literature 690
APs Bio 5, US Government 5

Congrats on raising your SAT! You put yourself right in the middle of 50% sats… With your impressive GPA and a now above average(for those colleges), you have a good chance of getting in. I think your major will be a factor in this process. What major did you choose, if any?

Thanks! And I really don’t know what I want to major in exactly, and I didn’t know it factored into the decision process much…I think I chose history. Is that good or bad? I’m also thinking about polysci, art history, and I would love to do some stuff with biology.

At this point, the only thing I can suggest is maybe factor in why history means so much to you? All I can see from your application in connection to history are your classes: world religion and AP European History. Maybe you should elaborate more on your passion of history… I’m not sure what the personal statements in those colleges are. All in all, you have a solid chance at all 3 colleges.
