I am a high school senior. My unweighted GPA is 3.0 with mostly honors courses. 2150 sat, 650 math, 700 writing, 800 reading. I go to a private jesuit high school, play 1 varsity sport, play in the music program, chess team, and few other ecs. do i have a chance of getting into fordham?

yeah of course man. i say 75% chance you’re in. right a good essay and have good recs.

im just worried about my gpa which is low for fordham and trending downward, also i got suspended last year if that makes any difference?

Ask your guidance counselor. Most private schools hide disciplinary actions.

Also, don’t worry about your GPA. I was accepted with an 85.6uw and a 1910 SAT.

my guidance counselor told me she had no idea where i would get in. And i had to put suspension on my app. isnt fordham trying to develop a better reputation academically?

bro your fine, I have pretty much the same GPA, but my SAT score isnt as awesome as yours Your in :D

did you get in?

yea I got in man, to FCLC, I am in the international studies program

yes, your SAT is above Fordham’s average, so you would help boost their SAT stats. I feel you have a good chance of getting in

Your SAT’s are good but Fordham cares just as much about GPA/class rank, as they’re both weighted equally to the school’s national rankings. I would say it’s a 50/50 but you need to get that disciplinary issue resolved. Just try to explain to them what happened and get a few really good rec’s. EC’s are important too…it’ll help your chances if you were involved in the community. Fordham places a lot of emphasis on taking students with high character…they have plenty of good students with those stats and aren’t really that desperate…they’re more interested in taking a diverse/well-versed student body that are good fits for Fordham than blindly looking at the SAT score (in response to yenrod’s comments). Good luck!

“my guidance counselor told me she had no idea where i would get in.”

What the heck kind of “guidance counselor” is that???
They should find another job.

AVHS dad…haaahaaaa…good one. Well, I have to tell you, in high schools, most guidance counselors are mediocre at best, particularly in public schools with a large enrollment. They do have some statistical analysis to be helpful, but most lack the time and the interest to develop a close relationship with admissions officers at schools…except maybe the flagship public university. The private schools SOMETIMES have relationships with admissions, sometimes not. It really depends on the school.

But I think that what the OP was saying was the guidance counselor was perplexed, as some of us here are, as to why the OP has a modest gpa and a very good SAT…a slight disconnect there. That needs to be explained. And the guidance counselor was saying its a crap shoot anyway…and it often is. Anyone who says they have it all figured out is pulling your short hairs.

No excuse. The OP goes to a private school. DS goes to a large public school and we know his GC quite well. As a parent I’ve gotten a pretty good idea of what colleges are out there and what it takes to get admitted. It’s supposed to be their JOB! Well, at least a part of their job.
