Will I get into Georgetown ????

Hey all! I'm going to be a senior this fall, and I'm a minority, born in London raised in the US. I want to apply to Georgetown, UMD college park, UMD Baltimore County, Boston College , loyola Maryland , virginia tech , Fordham, Johns Hopkins, George Washington and university of Richmond. My reach reach reeeach school is Duke. I am a Maryland resident.

STATS
GPA : 3.72 UW (expecting to graduate with a 3.99)

Taken 2 honors English classes (9th 10th grade year)

Got an A in all core classes, excluding 1 C in geometry, and a few B's

My school prohibits AP classes for underclassmen. in your junior year you're allowed to take 2 AP classes, during your senior year you're allowed to take 3.

I've taken 1 last year (AP Lang comp) I passed with a B

This year I'm taking AP lit and Psyc, and regular genetics (I have a half day for my pediatric internship)

I have not received my AP score yet

SATs weren't great, they were average; well because of my verbal section. I expect to get a 2020+ this time

I have never taken the ACT but I am taking it soon

Planning to take the Biology SAT II and the other is undecided

Class rank isn't available I'm pretty sure I'm in the top 10-15%

I'm very passionate about community service, I want to be a pediatric cardiologist.

Here are some of my ECs
.National honor society
.Student humanitarian association
.Founder of H.O.P.E peer mentoring group/organization
.I'm a political activist
.I'm a web designer
.member of angel tree program
. Played volleyball and lacrosse for club/varsity
. Member if FBLA or future business leaders of America
. I'm a pianist (played in 5 musical prod.)

I want to gain admission to all of these schools, please give your honest opinion and advice. Were my ECs too much? I filled all the spots for ECs on loyolas app. If my chances aren't good enough what can I do to change them? Any suggested schools on the east coast?

ALSO... I just joined NHS(national honor society) will that look bad? How does my schedule look?

Thanks- ;)

You seem to have some very unique extracurriculars, so I would really emphasize those in your application. Like political activist: you could speak about maybe how DC would help you further your pursuits in this.

To be honest, your grades and SAT/ACT are a little low for Georgetown…but if you work hard on your essays and get amazing recommendations, you can hopefully make up for it.

And no, a lot of schools have National Honors Society only available for seniors, so you should be fine!

A 2020 is low for these schools… A 3.7 is okay, but could be better – the C won’t help you at top schools either… Neither will not taking the most APs you can. Your ECs look random as all get out. Some might be interesting if you elaborate on them, such as “political activist” but until you elaborate on it, it has no weight… Now days, complaining is activism, so yeah. Your ECs, as a whole, seem very mundane and… Ordinary. If you can write good essays, you might have a better shot, but right now, nothing really distinguishes you from the average applicant. Well, other than the fact that the average applicant has a higher SAT score… I guess being a minority gives you a nice unfair advantage though, so with that said, I’d say…

Duke- No way.
JHU- High reach.
Georgetown- High reach.
BC- Reach.
GWU- High match.
Fordham- Low match.

You really have to have a perfect year next year, and take 3 APs, as well as right essays that make you look (A LOT) less ordinary than your application implies. You might want to try taking the ACT too… A friend of mine (our salutitorian, for what it’s worth) got an 1800 on the SAT, but a 32 on the ACT, with no prep! Anyway, your chances are low, but nontheless, best of luck, and may the odds be ever in your favor!

Being a minority doesn’t constitute a “nice unfair advantage.” That snide swipe should not be allowed a pass.

Back to OP: In applying to Georgetown and GWU, keep in mind that many, many highly competitive students are interested in IR, Poly Sci and other similar areas, so making yourself stand out if that is your interest, will be a challenge. Since you say you are interested in being medicine, that might actually be a help - both schools have strong sciences but fewer students go there for that reason. Alternatively, the pre-med fever at JHU makes it hard for students who are interested in that area to stand out when they apply. My point is to think through your application strategy carefully when looking at these schools. And by the way, you might want to consider adding St. Mary’s College of MD if you are in-state. It’s the public LAC - beautiful location, small classes, cooperative culture for pre-meds: Worth a visit!

You’ll get into: UMD College Park, UMD Baltimore County, Loyola Maryland, Virginia Tech, and Fordham

You may get into GWU and URichmond.

You won’t get into the others

Thanks!

Ill admit that it does look like I’m listing different names in the EC section.I will definitely elaborate more on “Political activist”, but besides that, which other ones should I include?

Honestly, the only schools I want to go to are Georgetown , GWU, Loyola, and the UMD schools. All of my older cousins go to JHU for their graduate years, so maybe I’ll apply to them later.

Here’s a listing for the AP classes my school offers for me which 3rd one should I take? :

AP Bio
AP US Gov & Politics
AP Chem
AP Calculus AB
AP Stats
AP US History
AP Enviromental Science

And @ M’s Mom whats so great about that school you’ve mentioned, not in a mean way, but they’ve been to my school several times and I never looked into them.

What do you mean by “political activist”? Are you an intern at a political campaign?

No my dad is a really strong democrat, my moms a strong republican. They participate and donate in many political events and functions, as for me, I organize groups of teens for a common cause, help them register to vote, help to get their voices heard.

I Was appointed by our governor (Martin O’Malley) to do this.

I think that the fact that you weren’t able to take aps is a real disappointment. But because you weren’t able to do so, you must excel in all the other areas, such as your school grades, ec, volunteer, and standardized tests. I think your volunteer/ extracurriculars look good, but your testing can be better. And just make sure that you excel in your act and sat II. As long as you emphasize your Ecs, I think you have a chance and the other colleges, but I think it might be hard for duke. But good luck!

If you do a search here of St. Mary’s, I’m sure a lot of threads will come up but from my perspective:

1) LACs are great for pre-meds: The classes are small so lots of personal attention, you form close relationships with faculty (who have to write those committee letters for med school), the culture tends to be cooperative rather than competitive between the pre-meds because of the small classes, and you aren’t competing with grad students for the research opportunities.

2) St. Mary’s, as a public LAC, is about half the cost of a private LAC if you are in-state. And medical school is wickedly expensive so you want to avoid going into debt at all costs.

3) Medical schools are much less interested in ‘prestige’ than any other grad schools - they want to see strong test scores and a high GPA. So giving up a ‘brand name’ in exchange for lower costs and smaller classes makes a lot of sense for pre-meds.

4) St. Mary’s campus is very attractive - located right on the Chesapeake - and has nice facilities. There isn’t much of a city or town outside (mostly chains as I recall), but that means all the action is on campus and students don’t leave on weekends to socialize elsewhere. But it’s still close enough to the beach and city to offer nice weekend excursions.

Overall, it’s worth checking out and would make a great choice for someone who doesn’t have to have an urban environment right outside their door.

I think you’re fine for GW; raise your SAT to 2100+ and you’d be set with a merit scholarship. However, the admissions office has sent out some funky decisions recently (rejecting kids with super stats, even kids with lots of interest). Overall, you should be OK for GW, though.

@ M’s Mom Okay, maybe I’ll try onsite admissions the next time the come for a college fair.

I’m already applying to schools now.I’m just stuck on essay topics

Thanks !! @gdubcolonial

You said your verbal is low, Georgetown is only verbal and math. So if you did the best on writing, and cr is low, your sat out of 1600 won’t be very competitive
