Will I get into James Madison University?

HELP! Jmu is my first choice school and I'm freaking out that I won't get in. I have a 3.4 gpa weighted and a 23 act score. I play tennis, have a job, I'm secretary of the key club, I was in fashion club and photography club and I take mostly honors courses and 1 AP. Do you think I'll get into early action or even for regular? I think I'll get deferred for early but in for regular. Also, do you know if they like alumni? My brother is a senior there now and I was wondering if that would help my chances at all.

Also, what are your views on Saint Joseph's university? I'd go there if I didn't get into jmu but I'm afraid it's a preppy, close minded rich kid school and I'm not like that at all.

JMU: Reach
St. Joseph’s: Low match/Match

I’ve been accepted in St. Joseph’s but I’m waiting on JMU. Do you think if I’m deferred for early action then ill get in for regular decision?

Based on what I know of students from my kids’ public high school in Northern Virginia who got into JMU, I don’t think you’ll get in early action, and it will still be a reach for you for regular decision there, but not impossible. You are borderline, so it could go either way. I think they give a little consideration to sibling legacy but not a lot. Most of the students who have gotten into JMU from our school have taken at least five AP or IB classes and have weighted GPA’s of no lower than 3.5 and higher than that for unweighted. 23 is on the lower end of their ACT range but still in the range (just barely). Some of it will depend on the strength of your curriculum – as in, how demanding/challenging your coursework has been. If you don’t get in, you could always set your sights on doing really well at the school where you start and transferring into JMU. Good luck – I know it’s hard waiting.

I understand your pain! I am waiting for April. But don’t worry and stress over it. I know I am being hypocritical but if you over think it too much its unhealthy. There are people with similar stats like you (me). But I did some research and found that people like us got accepted as well. They take your essay, mid year report and teacher rec into consideration. however it is hard to tell whether you have a chance. you are like in the middle.

Chance me back please?

I have to say that I don’t think you will get into JMU. My D applied EA last year and got deferred. Then was placed in the wait list. Unfortunately, a spot didn’t open up for her and she enrolled in the honors college at a different university. Her stats:
3.87 GPA with honors and 4 AP Classes; 27 ACT, varsity sport all four years, club sport two years, NHS, key club, other ECs, plus a part time job last two years as a gymnastics coach.

Good luck with the rest of your senior year
