I applied for EA JMU for the Fall 2020 term and am worried whether or not I will be accepted. JMU is my top school.
GPA: 3.47 weighted
IB Classes: 8 IB Classes (am also taking the hardest IB class that IB offers currently as well)
SAT: 1150
Am currently taking two sciences (because I know JMU like to see Physics on transcripts): IB Biology HL II and Physics
Am a part of many clubs and organization (9 clubs/organization total). One of the organizations that I put on my application, I have been participating in for about 10 years now. I also volunteer a lot and am very involved in the school. I am also a part of my school’s student government.
I have a sibling that currently attends JMU now.
I have a feeling that I might get deferred to regular decision but would I have a chance at regular decision?
I also forgot to mention that my close friend passed away junior year and that was a reason for my GPA. I wrote about it in my personal statement
I’m thinking you may get waitlist from the regular admission process. Hopefully I’m wrong. Hopefully the Legacy and your personal statement help.
@cbl1 what do you think will be the GPA/SAT stats for early action. Im pretty confident my son will get in RD but he applied EA. Not his first choice but he also has a good friend that is basically the only school he is applying so just curious if you have a guess
I don’t expect anyone below 3.7 weighted getting in early action unless other circumstances that push them up the list. Sat of mid-1200s up being submitted would I think help those at 3.7.
@cbl1 thank you! Hopefully I don’t get waitlisted though with JMU being my absolute dream school. I also have a recommendation letter from one of my teachers that I forgot to put on my original post! I also have a very strong upward trend since freshman year. I had about 3-4 C’s my freshman year; 1 C my sophomore year; all A’s and B’s my junior year. Do you think my upward trend will weigh into their decision?
I also took 4 years (1 year in IB) of Latin. I know that JMU looks for either 2 and 2 years or 3 years of a language.
Honestly, no one can accurately “chance you” — who knows what actually happens in that admissions office! Hopefully we will all hear some good news soon!
They will look at trends
My son has following stats and got deferred from EA. I think JMU admission is getting tough this year (especially for NOVA kids). What is his chance to get in RD?
U/W GPA 3.55 (W/GPA 3.87) for the first 3 years
Class rank: 125/365 (I know this is not very good)
Senior mid-year grades: U/W GPA 3.66 (W/GPA 4.28)
SAT 1370 (Math 670, EBRW 700)
8 APs, 6 Honors and 2 DEs classes
lots of extracurricular activities and leaderships
Average essay (did not put much effort into it)
I think he will get in. Maybe from waitlist but I think he will.
If his chances are slim then Im definitely not getting in as well. I also got deferred. 3.5W gpa and 1130 sat
@PLO2020 I am surprised your son didnt get in. You are Instate and the SAT is higher than the average. Your sons are similar to mine My sons GPA was a bit higher but his SAT was a bit lower and he got in EA. In state too. Not sure what they used but I would bet he will get in.
Update: I got deferred from Early Action but was accepted in Regular Decision!
@seniorszn2020 Congrats!
@GKUnion Thank you! I will be attending JMU in the fall!
