<p>I'm an african-american female and live near Houston, TX. I'm ranked 11/415, GPA 3.955/4.0 scale. all Honors/AP classes when available. Taking Calculus BC AP, Computer Science AP, Chemistry AP (Physics wasn't available because not enough people signed up), Statistics AP, and Spanish 4 AP as my classes next year. By the time I get into college I'll already have all of my basics done and have between 18 to 24 hours of college credit.</p>
<p>Got a 1850 on my SAT (don't know if that's good or bad) with a 690 on the Math section (it said because of this i was in the 92nd percentile nationally, and 95th in Texas).
I don't feel like listing everything I've done, but cheerleading, track, NHS, the typical achiever types of things.</p>
<p>What do you think my chances are like to get into the school? (i want to do architectural or civil engineering)</p>
<p>Well your rank puts you in the top 2.66% of your class, which is very good in UT’s eye. They are really big on class rank.</p>
<p>I had a friend who had essentially the same stats as you and he got into Cockrell but didnt get into his first choice major. He wanted to do Mechanical but didnt get accepted to it and is now in Electrical. If you want to pretty much gurantee you get into the major within Cockrell you want you probably want to get that SAT score up to around 2000 with the math part above 700.</p>

@Spartan5: i was going to make my first choice architectural and my second civil. have you heard about the architectural engineering program being hard to get into or anything?</p>
<p>I think Arch. is harder to get into than civil. Definitely take the SAT again, or perhaps take the ACT ASAP. Many students do better on the ACT and UT just translates the score into a comparable SAT score. If you can pull up your score just a bit, you should have no trouble getting your first choice.</p>
<p>Mostly because of y’alls statements I’m worried! If I don’t get into my 1st choice architectural, I’m scared i won’t get into my 2nd choice: civil!</p>
<p>If you don’t get your first major, your application doesn’t receive any like “negative points” because you didn’t get into your first major selection. You will then be compared to students looking into civil. If you still don’t do well there, UT actually has a hidden third choice, and all students who don’t get their first and second majors are compared for this. All studies get this option, you just can’t select it - It’s called Undergraduate Studies (and I think the Fall 2011 freshman are the first time this is offered). If you don’t get into that college, they deny admissions to the university.</p>
<p>If I were you, I would look into the College of Undergraduate Studies a bit, just to get an understanding of their programs. They basically help you get your foot in the door of the majors of your choice. I think they also try to help you choose courses that would be transferable or useful in your field. I’m not really for sure, I just heard an admissions counselor discuss it at an admissions informational session.</p>
<p>I think Mechanical is the hardest to get into so you should probably get into Architectural and if you dont get into civil I would be shocked. Plus you have a natural advantage of being a girl applying for engineering. Its easier for girls to get into engineering because it is such a male dominated major and the university wants to have more girls in it.</p>
<p>I couldn’t really be in the College of Undergraduate Studies because i already basically have all my basics done, so i think i’d rather go to another college, even though i love UT, if i didn’t did into the cockrell school of engineering. i really hope i get in, though. i love ut and i’d love to be in the school.</p>
<p>Don’t panic! I think your chances are EXTREMELY good!! An improved SAT/ACT score can only help.</p>
<p>The point is to go in to UGS for one year, complete all your basic requirements (you can’t have them all done from AP tests, like GOV 312L), and then transfer to Engineering after your first year.</p>
<p>So is it easier get into Computer Engineering program or other engineering progarm at UT Texas.??</p>

<p>spartan5 is incorrect. Architectural Engineering is the hardest department to get into, followed by Biomedical Engineering.</p>
<p>Architectural & Biomedical are the hardest to get into. Mechanical is very popular and would follow next. Being female and African-American boost your chances. But your will need a higher SAT score…</p>
<p>oh, if i didn’t get in I definitely wouldn’t want to just ‘play it safe’ and hope I could get in the next year, but I know that there honestly would be no classes that weren’t major oriented my first year. The classes I’d be taking would be Differential and Integral Calculus, and Chemistry, and that’s the only classes I can think off of the top of my head that I would need as a ‘basic’. I will already have both parts of english, history, and government done. my needed art credit done and my needed social science done. so it’s not much for me to do as an UGS student</p>
<p>Well then if you don’t make it into UT, you’re better off going to another university and possibly transfering your sophomore year if you are indeed really set on UT.</p>

<p>GuitarIsMySoul - You wouldn’t have GOV 312L done, only the first. You should probably try majoring in Natural Sciences or Liberal Arts. You can always transfer in after a semester or year…</p>
<p>I meant if she didn’t get into her major of choice, not the university. If you don’t get into your major of choice, or your second major by some remote chance, you’re automatically placed into UGS. If she doesn’t want to do that, she’s better off attending a university that has an engineering program, and then transfering her sophomore year if her heart is set on UT.</p>
<p>With that being said, UGS is still a good option for some people.</p>
<p>It is really hard to get a good GPA at another school to try to transfer at UT. You would need at least a 3.8+ for those engineering majors. And engineering classes are no joke… I would make Civil/Architectural Engineering as first choice and maybe something like Psychology/Biology 2nd…</p>
