I'm a junior in high school. This is what my stats should be like after next year.

african american male from nationally ranked public school in washington dc
GPA- 2.7
SAT- 1620 (don't know yet, i'm retaking in june w/ sat prep course)
EC- JROTC (1yr)
Debate (4yrs)(Many awards, top JV speaker in virginia, maryland,dc)
School Newspaper (1yr)
Community Service (160hrs)
I have a couple of recommendations from very prominent teachers that I will receive.
I know my stats aren't great, but will i get into UMASS (amherst/boston), if not, any suggestions. (i want to study journalism/communications) preferably north of washington dc.

I don't know your OOS chances for UMass Amherst, but don't even consider UMass Boston. There are no dorms; it is completely a commuter school. You don't want to have to find a place to live on your own.

i got in out of state from PA this yr... i dunno really how hard it is to get in out of state as compared to in state... but i can tell you my stats and stuff anyway...
im a white female from PA im going to a small public schools that does not rank but i know im in the top 15 out of 45... i had a 3.4gpa weighted end of junior yr... im in 3 honors classes this yr (all that was offered) and i played varsity tennis all 4 years i am also on yearbook , model un, an exchnage programe, random acts, drama, stage crew and i have a part time job...i had a really good essay about a personal issue that took place last summer i got a 1600 on the new SAT's.... the only down fall from lookin at ur stats would prob be ur activites maybe try and get a few more in this year..... good luck!

I also was accepted to umass from out of state and i will be attending in the fall as a business major. I didn't think my grades were too hot, but i got in and was given money. So i think you should be okay, work on your SATs because that is what i think set me apart. Good luck with your college search and enjoy your senior year it goes sooo fast!

you will most likely get into umass boston, it doesn't have dorms, but they can help you with living arangments. there are apartments for students right near there.

GoNavyXC, where did you get that statistic? According to the UMass Amherst website, there were 17,930 applicants for a class of 4,222. Much less than an 80% admit rate.

Even if there is an 80% admit for Massachusetts residents, the OP is out of state. Admit rates are also lower.

Admit rates for out-of-state students are lower than that for in-state. But the original poster does have some things that make him attractive to a school like UMass Amherst not the least being that they don't get a tonne of students from D.C, the debate awards and participation, and he has fairly strong writing skills. I think he can take advantage of the application itself to talk about himself, and that will show off his writing and may help. I think he may make an interesting candidate.

If he can up his SAT somewhat, he may just get in. It's definately worth applying to UMass Amherst.

I think that he will get into UMass Boston, if that's a school he's interested in. But I think a school in between UMass Amherst and UMass Boston is UMass Lowell. It's a strong school - stronger, academically, than Boston, but will slightly less competitive admissions standards for some programs than UMass Amherst.

But in terms of fit, I think he'd be a great fit for UMass Amherst. Here's to hoping you get in!

I went to UMass my first year and believe me, it's not that hard to get into, especially since you're out of state. UMass loves you because you have to pay $13,000 more than us in-state students and, quite frankly, that's all they care about. They will do anything to make a buck. They accepted so many people last year that they had to put some of them up in the HoJo [Howard Johnson Hotel] which was a good distance from the actual campus and others were forced to live in their buildings lounges with 3 other roommates because there was such a housing pinch [even though there are currently 41 buildings to live in, 5 of which are 22-floor towers, 4 new ones in the making, and most upper-classmen live off campus]. If you have a problem getting into UMass, just call them and be like "plz, I really want to come here." They'll cave. To get what you want from them, you just need to complain enough.

You will get into Umass Amherst. Believe me. You may not like it.

SATs? Give me a break.

School Acceptance Rate: 80%

That's 4/5 drunks.

How do I know? I'm a rising junior there.

Do yourself a favor: Aim higher. Don't be tempted by the low tuition. I have a full scholarship there, and I regret not going to NYU Stern.

The school is rank #104 doctoral by USN&R, but it's the reputation that kills you. The degree is severely undervalued. 1. It's a public school. 2. It's ZooMass.

Alcohol and violence and weed: that's a big part of the student body. Although there are some deserving kids who actually know what they want in life and excel academically... you may find it difficult to adjust.

Most people on CC are highly motivated students with an idea of what they want. Let me assure you, that by having handfuls of friends at Umass and handfuls of friends at LACs and Tier 1 schools... there's a big disparity.

"We pregame better than you party." Take a look, and see if this is what you want employers to think of, when they see "Umass Amherst" on your r

Thanks everybody. I really appreciate all the knowledge I'm gaining from this.
Wolfy, I never knew that about UMASS, I'll take that into consideration when I make my choice.

Good luck ADH, hope all works well for you. If you do decide to go to Umass, let me know if you need any advice on course selection or employment.

I really don't think you should be basing your decisions about a school based on three completely random strangers' opinions. Call the school and ask an admissions officer about your chances. That's what I did. If you're worried about the things stated on this board, talk to alumni and get the true story.

While on the subject of acceptance, I was accepted there this past weekend. I am curious to know if I may have any money coming my way. I"m still waiting on a response after a being deferred from Northeastern University, which is probably my top choice. Anyway: I have a 3.779 weighted GPA, 76/459 rank which is top 17%, 1710 on SATs, 26 on ACT, good amount of extra curricular activities as well. I didn't get any notification of merit yet, but I'm curious to know cause that will play a role in my decision. Thanks to anybody who can help.

I presume you don't test well 1710/2400 is slighly above average. Your grades and class rank are certainly better than your test scores. I would think you'll need above 1200 math and reading to get much aid, unless there is alot of demonstrated need.
