Of course you can, anyone can get into UMass.

I’m a high school senior planning on taking a gap year next year and then applying to umass amherst

GPA: freshman/soph: 2.9, junior/senior:3.4 (I transferred schools after sophomore year so I have two separate gpas)

SATs: writing-590, math-630, cr-790 (overall-2010)

ECs: theater, dance, choir, track, an internship at a senator’s office, 3 summers of an internship working with kids in a theater program, SALSA (students advocating life without substance abuse), and make-a-wish club

I’m taking a gap year because I missed a month and half of school towards the end of my senior year due to a concussion and then a need for surgery, and as a result I had to drop my last term of calc. I believe I meet all the requirements as far as academic credits are concerned. I’m just a bit afraid my gpa from my first two years of high school is a bit low, although that was affected by a diagnosis of celiac disease and epilepsy which I could inform the admissions counselors of, if need be.

I’m just wondering if it’s possible to get into commonwealth with these scores? During my gap year I’m planning to take a few college courses as well, so hopefully I’ll get good grades in them and be able to demonstrate that I’m capable of college level work.

Any comments/opinions would be helpful.

With a 1420 on M/CR and 3.4 your last two years, IMO your chances are excellent.

As for getting into the honors college - probably not on admission, but if you have a 3.2 or better your college freshman year you can get in after that. The bar is not that high, something like 15% of students are in Commonwealth College.

Make sure you investigate this thoroughly. By taking college courses you could be considered a transfer student when you apply. This can affect your chances for admission, and possibly affect any financial aid you might get.

Are you sure you need calc for admission? The minimum requirement is only 3 years of high school math.

Maybe other options would be to apply for spring admission, or attend community college for a semester or two and then transfer. Unless you are set on taking a gap year.

I took a bad hit with an awful math teacher in 10th grade who almost failed half of the people my class, we ended up with D’s as our final grade, though it wasn’t our fault, she was never there. Anyways, my gpa is like 2.56, sat’s 1680/2400 on my first try without classes or studying, I’m aiming for at least a 1900…average of my town -___-, and i have some extra curricular activities. Any help or feedback?

^ One bad class isn’t the only reason why your GPA is at 2.5.

What are your M+CR scores? UMass doesn’t use the writing portion.

Right now your GPA is well below and your SATs are a little below UMass Amherst averages. These are the most important things that UMass looks at. ECs/essays don’t count for as much.

If you can get your M+CR SAT scores up to around the 75th percentile (1260 or so) and have a killer fall semester I think you will have a decent chance.
