Make sure you apply early decision if Unc is what you want. You are coming from a very competitive county, and they have a quota from each county.

if i do early decsion, what are my chances with the stats i have

I would only apply ED to UNC-Chapel Hill if that is your clear first choice. I would suggest speaking with your high school counselor who will probably have a good idea of how students with your profile have done going to UNC, as that is probably the best way to be “chanced.” But regardless, shoot your shot and see what happens. I definitely think you stand a chance, though by no means do I think it’s a lock.

I will say that when you communicate with people who are not your friends (i.e. your teachers, counselors, college admissions officers, anyone associated with your ECs or that you’re asking questions to), I would try to use standard capitalization and spelling.

That’s difficult to know. Depends on the strength of the other applicants. All you can do is put out your best application. Apply early decision if UNC is clearly your first choice.

I am under the impression UNC CH only has EA and RD. They do not have early decision.

UNC does not have ED, only EA or regular. Definitely appt early action and really focus on strong essays. My best guess, you’ll likely be on the bubble.

Apply EA…it’s not binding…and you can still apply to the other colleges on your list…and you will have until May 1 to make your matriculation decision.

wb nc state engineeering with the same stats

and will not being in the top percent, being top 12 or 13% impact chances a lot you are in a competitive school?

I think you have a decent shot for UNC Chapel Hill as an in-state student if you are in the top 15% of your class with testing/grades/EC to match (and you do).

This might be helpful to drill into specific NC college admittance rates from your school…

Unlike Chapel Hill, NC State admits by major so some majors are much more competitive for freshman admittance. Not sure how much business/info science majors are affected by this.

Maybe.

But I would take the test and get a score b4 assuming.

Get Eagle. Rock the SAT. You’re in.

Unfortunately, your bar for getting in to Chapel Hill is much higher being from Mecklenburg County (or Wake County or Guilford County). If your school has Naviance, take a look at that data to see how you stack up with past classes from your high school.

If you told me you lived in a rural part of the state, your chances would be much better.

thx man, i wont be able to get eagle before submitting apps though but will get it before i am 18. also what would u say sat wise i would need to get, i am confident i can get around 1480 currently.

In Charlotte, your individual school will have a big impact. Providence, Myers Park, Ardrey Kell, etc are really tough in Meck; Weddington, Marvin Ridge, Cuthbertson are very competitive in Union; class rank will play an important role. Check Naviance to see who was accepted over the last 2 cycles. Keep in mind lower end points can be athletic admits. Work on your essays and apps over the summer and get your teacher references lined up; make sure you have a resume/brag sheet to provide them. Good luck with the process!

I have no idea about SAT cutoff but if you are close to Eagle. If you don’t get that, you will regret it. I think you can mention “on track” for Eagle Scout of something similar on your apps especially if you have all of your merit badges and your project approved.

They say they do not have a quota, but who knows :person_shrugging: I do know that they want to get kids from all across the state, but I’m not sure that translates to a quota.

I think you have a good chance. I am in NC and I have seen kids with similar stats get in. How do you stats compare to your sibling’s?

UNC-C is a good safety/target for you. NC State engineering can be a tough admit. I don’t want to hazard a guess there. You should get into any other NC public as a safety or target.

I don’t know that it is a quota. However, they promote that they try have good representation across all 100 counties. I have heard that when you apply you are really “competing” against the other applicants from your county, not the kids applying from Wayne, Lenoir, Jones, Craven etc.

From the admissions page:

"Forty percent of all North Carolina first-year and new transfer students were from rural counties. "

That doesn’t translate to a quota to me. And yes they would love to have the top students from each county but that would just be 100 students.

I should have mentioned that I am in the Triangle and have seen kids around here get in with similar stats, but I agree with the others it’s not a shoo-in. Do well on your essays and get good recommendations. Do your best to get that SAT/ACT up there and I think you have a decent shot, and if you would be happy at UNC-C or another UNC system school (App State?) then that’s the best attitude to have.
