Will I get rescinded from UCSD?

Hey guys!

I’m in a kinda bad situation right now. I just realized today that I will be receiving a D in AP Chemistry which violates the UCSD contract which should rescind me.

My senior year GPA is still above a 3.0 (both semesters combined), and AP Chemistry is my 5th year of science (I took Chemistry Honors 9th, AP Bio 10th, APES and AP Physics 11th), and in all of these courses I got mostly As and a few Bs, so my A-G for science is well over complete.

I also have the option to enroll in a local community college to take Chem 1A (equivalent of AP Chemistry) and if I do so, then will I be able to compel UCSD not to rescind me?

The reason for my low grade is because of a 2 week leave I had to take because of a family emergency. During my 6 week progress report, I had a B in the class, but because I missed so much curriculum, my grade suffered. I also did my final research paper wrong and I offered to redo a portion of it which was wrong, but my teacher said that I couldn’t redo it.

Is there anything I can do to not get rescinded?

If I do get rescinded, will I still be able to attend UCR (I didn’t SIR there, but I am part of the Honors Program as well as a Chancellor’s Scholar)

I’m really worried and I would really appreciate any help/advice!

THX SO MUCH <3

You need to contact admissions at UCSD. They usually review each applicant’s case separately so there is no one answer that fits all. Since you have SIR’d they may want you to retake the class during the summer. Admissions really tries hard not to rescind applicants and I am sure they would be willing to work with you. Call tomorrow ASAP.

Thanks so much @Gumbymom !

Should I say something like “The grade I earned was very unlike me as I have several 4s and 5s on my AP Science exams as well as mostly As and Bs in my past classes?” Or would that feign pretentiousness?

Unless there are extenuating circumstances such as illness, family death etc… that contributed to your lower grade, unless they ask, I would not elaborate on the subject. They should have your application file, so they know you are a good student or they would have never accepted you into their school. Just call, give them the heads up and ask what you can do to retain your acceptance.

@Gumbymom Is there anything I could say, specifically, that would heighten my chances of retaining my admission? Also what do you, personally, believe my chance of retaining acceptance is determined on the poor circumstances I led myself into?

I would notify the school and see what they say. If they ask you to explain, mention the time out of school due to a family emergency but do not make excuses. Answer them honestly. Like I stated above, other than this D, you are a qualified student in the eyes of UCSD admissions. They could dismiss this completely, ask you to take a summer class or rescind your acceptance (highly unlikely). Admissions is the only ones that can tell you what will happen, since myself and any other CC posters can only speculate.

I highly appreciate your responses @Gumbymom You’re a very informative contributor!

A few of my friends told me that they rescind about half the people that get a D and make the other half take a summer class, but you have said it’s highly unlikely, and so I’m in a position of confusion as I don’t know who to believe.

How would your friends know? Do they have first hand knowlege? I would check this thread out: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/ask-dean-topics/903319-when-do-colleges-rescind-acceptances-p1.html

Go to the source, they are the only ones you can believe.

Thanks so much @Gumbymom

I think you should be ok for UCSD if you have above a 3.0 average, it used to be weighted average. I don’t know if it has changed or not.

I hope they won’t rescind. But having 2 weeks out of school is a lot of time off. It’s hard to justify unless you have proof.

@coolweather I have proof of absence from my school. Is there any other proof I’d need?

@DrGoogle Are you sure? I’m thinking that I should still call them.

I stand corrected.
It’s 3.0 weighted for senior year with no Ds and Fs. But in past years, I followed some CCers and they eventually enrolled at UCSD. But I would call UCSD for 100% accuracy.

It’s under scholarship requirements for freshman.

@DrGoogle @Gumbymom Is the GPA calculated as an average of both the fall and spring semester of senior year?

Post #14, I used to think it was 3.0 weighted average for senior year because one of my kids almost got D in several subjects, think it was almost Honors Chem and AP Calculus. But others said per semester, so I’m not 100% sure.

You really have to contact them. They will appreciate that you got ahead of it and were proactive. Yes tell them you had to leave for 2 weeks due to family emergency so it doesn’t seem like you had seniority and didn’t even try. No one else can tell you because it is a judgement call on the part of admissions. You need to know now so you can make other plans in case worse comes to worst.

You might try to appeal, but according to this CCer “chickenFairy”, she was denied financial aid, see her last post, so it seems like she was rescinded with one D in her first senior semester.

@DrGoogle I got the D my second semester. I had a B my first semester.

@Gumbymom @DrGoogle @BrownParent I just called them and they said that my admissions will likely be canceled  They said I can do the community college class and try to appeal.
