Hi all. Yesterday was prom and I had far too much to drink. I have always been a good student. My GPA is 4.2 I am 8th/411 i got a 1560 on the SAT and 34 on the ACT. additionally, i’m also a highly ranked swimmer in the state, i was on track to become state champion this year. however, since last night was prom, I brought some alcohol to a friends house and we drank. i drank far too much, clearly. so by the time we got to the dance i was already gone, the next thing i remember is waking up at home. Nobody got hurt. from what people have told me only the paramedics and police showed up. my prom group and i will be meeting with the administration tomorrow. in terms of punishments, what should i expect? I already know i won’t be able to swim for high school anymore and i might not be able to walk at graduation. Also, i’m almost certain that no legal action will be taken, only disciplinary action at school, perhaps a suspension? What should i expect on uchicago’s part?
If your school suspends you they probably will let uchicago know. I would be very apologetic and take full responsibility for what happened. If your school does let Chicago know, you should be ready to plead your case to them and maybe have a backup plan for another school. A similar thing happened to a family friend and luckily the school (Berkeley) did not rescind. Good luck and just be completely honest, humble, and remorseful for your actions. You let people down and you feel horrible.
Right. i forgot to mention that the school said that they wont “directly” tell uchicago. but if chicago finds out do you think i should be okay?
Be transparent. And just incase, maybe you should SIR to a state school as well.
I can’t tell you what will happen. Go into the meeting with your school with full remorse. If Chicago finds out be ready to plead your case. Are your parents aware of what is going on?
DO NOT send in a second deposit with your state school as suggested in post #3. You may only deposit at one school at a time – double depositing can lead to being rescinded from both colleges.
See what happens at the meeting tomorrow (be honest, admit your mistake etc.) and listen to the advice of your guidance counselor.
Yes. both of my parents are aware. are my odds of getting rescinded high? i guess another way to phrase it is how likely would it be that uchicago rescinds my acceptance?
You will know more after the meeting tomorrow, I wish I could tell you what will happen, but I can’t.
Ask your high school administrator if they would notify UChicago. If the answer is no then there is no need to do anything. If the answer is yes then you should coordinate with your school on how/when to let U Chicago know.
I think what’s more important is that you drank to the point you blacked out (you did not remember what happened). You will be going off to college this fall and there will be a lot more alcohol available, and how are you going to make sure it won’t happen again. I don’t know that many young adults who drank to a point that paramedics and police showed up. If I were your parent I may wonder if you were ready to go away to college.
@throwaway167890 “since last night was prom, I brought some alcohol to a friends house and we drank”
You’re having some trouble with cause-and-effect here. The fact that it was prom did not cause you to bring booze to a friend’s or drink to the point of blacking out. Have you had that much to drink on other occasions? Have you lost consciousness before? In the long run, what you do about these questions is a lot more important than whether your acceptance to university will be withdrawn or how much contrition you have to demonstrate before enrollment.
UChicago might have rescinded if you did such antics while on the April Overnight and got caught. I wouldn’t worry about this too much but let it be a lesson. And don’t repeat it.
OP, let me give you an UChicago perspective.
First of all, a disclaimer. No one on CC or red dit (where you post the same question: seriously, you expect a bunch of high school kids can answer your question?) can predict UChicago response with high level of confidence. None of us is Dean Boyer and you haven’t given us the full details about your drinking episode. So the following is just an educated guess.
From a conversation between a student and the Dean of Student Jay Ellison last year, summer melt may happen but usually the number is in single digit. So UChicago does not frequently rescind its offer.
And two years ago during O-Week, a bunch of 1st year were brought to ER after over drinking. Note none of them were expelled afterwards

Now assuming you just drank so much that you had to go to ER but no one else was hurt, my guess would be no rescinding of your offer of admission. But most likely you will be given a stern warning. If Dean Boyer did not kick out the eight underage students who probably were as drunk as you were last night, he is not likely to rescind your admission offer. After all, what is the difference between those eight students and you? You did it in April of your senior year and they did it during O-week before classes started. All of you were pre-frosh. If they could stay in school, so should you.
Now if your drinking led to drunk driving and other people were injured, all bets are off.
Are you swimming for UChicago? If so, would the coach be looking for your record? You mentioned that you were on track to be state champ. Are you a recruit and did the coach help you with admissions?
Of course you will not be rescinded. Kids drink at prom and learn painful lessons. Colleges simply don’t care about minor, stand-alone drug and alcohol issues. Cheating and plagiarism gets you rescinded, but not this. Good luck weathering this storm.
