Will I Get Rescinded?

Accepted for pre Biz Econ at UCLA, but this spring I’m pretty sure I got a D in Calc II (major pre-req course). I’ve let admissions know, but most people with this worry get Cs, so wondering if anyone has dealt with this before. I’m taking 34 units this spring, so I wonder if that would argue my case somewhat.

What does your provisional admission contract state regarding the required grades for your spring courses?

The fact that you got a D in a major course requirement will likely mean a rescind. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. This will likely be true at every UC that has Calc 2 as a requirement for the major.

34 units? I hope that’s quarter. ?

@Gumbymom same as pretty much every contract everyone else receives

@Ohm888 34 semester, 9 classes, all As except Calc 2. Not sure why you would hope its quarter

@defaultstudent1 actually not everyone gets the same contract. There are numerous ones, some more stringent than others.

Second, you’re lucky you got in with 34 semester last term. That level is essentially unheard of and the concern from the UC POV is you can’t get good grades. However, you’ll get an answer soon enough.

@Ohm888 nobody gets a contract where you can get a D, so thats a moot point. Transferrable load is 27, but I added a few before I sent in application. And I already said my grades, so that’s not a concern either

The contract is to maintain your GPA. Pre-Econ is very competitive so that a drop from A to D for five units (I guess Cal is 5 units) may cause a big concern. But UCLA only rescinded very few admission last year (I don’t remember but less than 5 or 8 when I read it before), I think you may have a chance if you suggest to re-take it in summer. If not, that’s a big issue as Calculus 2 is required for major. And D is Fail, not Pass as a C.

@Bibihcmvn Can you provide the link where it says UCLA rescinded less than 5-8 people? I thought that info was never publicly announced.

@Ohm888 I read/heard it for sure from Admission Director (maybe interview on newspaper or public resources) when I was worried that my admission could be rescinded. However, when I have more time I will look for it again for you.

Thanks^^^

@Ohm888 There is a USA Today article from July 2017 that reports UCLA revoked 7 freshman offers that year. This was part of a larger story about UCI rescinding 500

^^^ thanks @svlab112. It would be nice to know the transfer #s. I’ll try and find some data. ?

An update: got an F in Calc II. Berkeley Haas rescinded my acceptance, but Cornell Dyson and UCLA still accepted me.
To any people in the future looking at this thread: don’t expect any of the regulars here to know anything, they will just parrot the same useless crap over and over.
My situation was unique in that it warranted some leniency, so don’t think this applies to you unless you are transferring early, taking many units, are a nontraditional student, and are working.

Has UCLA explicitly confirmed to you that they will not be rescinding you? Not saying they will, I’m just curious. It is still pretty early in the summer so I’m curious on exactly how they determine who gets rescinded and when so if you could share whether they explicitly told you, that’d be helpful to future applicants.

@HeyItsNick I let each of the admissions committees know via email prior to the end of the semester about my grade. I had to send an unofficial transcript after the semester was over, and I got a reply from all three in about 3 weeks. Berkeley had an update on the admissions portal, Cornell confirmed via email (Calc II also wasnt required, ymmv). And UCLA gave me a revised acceptance letter that required me to receive a B or higher in the summer.

Not sure why youd think I’d say I was still accepted without an explicit confirmation.

@defaultstudent1 Thanks for letting us know. It will help students in future years, congratulations on your acceptance and good luck passing Calc II.

I think I did say that you should re-take the course in summer and UCLA were very likely to work with you if so. Now you got their revised contract from UCLA for passing it in summer.

However, to be honest, I do not hope to know you or maybe accidentally in the same study group with you if you will eventually go to UCLA for pre-business econ. (Since we are forming a Business Econ group to help each other for the next 2 years at UCLA).

Good luck to you.

I also said you’d “likely” get a rescind in a “major course requirement”. “Likely.” Second, I see now that calc 2 is not a major course requirement. You still need a B to get in and I wish you the best of luck. Putting people down who are trying to help and calling people names is your prerogative. Just be aware of how it comes across. Even with Nick who asked a simple question, you got defensive and asked in so many words what his issue was. Anyway, good luck and enjoy. ?

@Ohm888 Calc II is still required for UCLA

Did UCLA require you to retake the course? Or did you voluntarily elect to retake to be proactive and included this as work in progress? In your OP, you did not indicate you were retaking. Do think retaking was key to your outcome? Good luck.
