What about those who dont apply coz they dont know about it!!!???! Does MIT get a record of whether a person applied or not to RSI - maybe that will tell them whom to compare on the basis of RSI and whom on other factors!!

That's true. I'm sure there must be quite a few people who never knew, and still dont know, abt RSI.

Do they have a lot of Romanian students at RSI?

i believe RSI is not an ULTIMATE thing MIT looks for....my friend in singapore said that there were 10 students from his school who had participated in RSI but only one got admission in MIT....and the one who did get admission herself said that RSI wasn't that big a factor in her application....so i think MIT is not THAT partial towards RSI...

I really hope thats true!! Thank god!! They obviously cant judge someone who didnt even apply to RSI with someone who attended on the basis of just RSI!! COmparing RSI rejects and accepts is OK since RSI and MIT admission has many common features! But this obviously cant be extended as above!!

How come 10 people got from same school in Singapore to RSI!!????

I have a friend who has similar stats as the OP, way better SAT1s (around 2300), same SAT2s. He had amazing IGCSE results. Plus, great IB scores (Mid year of 39). But not as many awards. Plus since he's an American citizen, he may have better chances (I've heard that MIT accepts VERY few internationals each year - like around 80ish. Correct me if I'm mistaken)
Either way, he got deffered from MIT and Caltech EA. If u want more info on him, I could ask him to post, coz I cant give u exact figures.

Trust me - RSI is a ticket into MIT. You are already in.

Tha above statement cannot be true if this is:
"my friend in singapore said that there were 10 students from his school who had participated in RSI but only one got admission in MIT"
MM what i said is correct 100%....i talked to him this morning itself when he told me abt this....i guess because the country wass overly represented MIT was more choosy...

Indian RSI student means a lot since very few people make it to RSI from India.

yeah exactly....

Singapore didnt have 10 students to RSI this year. There were 5 I guess. As for only one got into MIT, I believe, that stat might be wrong or skewed. Skewed because it is quite probable that they did not apply to MIT. International students are encouraged by RSI to pursue their undergraduate in their home country. So there is a good enough probability that they just didn't apply. Wrong because how does your friend know if they actually didn't get admission. Internationals can't apply EA at MIT and RD results are not yet out. RSI's international pool is believed to be decently competetive, if not as competetive as the U.S. one (they only select 30 at the end). Ask those who applied this year and you will come to know, how tough it is.
And rememer SAT 1 isn't mandatory for internationals at MIT!!

"What about those who dont apply coz they dont know about it!!!???! Does MIT get a record of whether a person applied or not to RSI - maybe that will tell them whom to compare on the basis of RSI and whom on other factors!!"
Well dude if the colleges take that method to decide they wont be able to decide anything.. For eg. The colleges decide greatly based on olympiads...now though the olympiads are famous there are many many many good indians who never get to know about the olympiads and hence dont participate..but still the colleges take them...Even KVPY..the guy who took part from my school..(Prateek Agarwal) I wonder whether u know him or not..is not the brightest of the lot in our school..as we have an all india topper in our class but he didn't participate coz he never knew..(btw he is also applying to the states)..so not knowing wont do you any good..i mean who's th idiot here...no one but us who did not know whatever the reason might be.

"10 students from his school who had participated in RSI "

This is very highly impractical..there is no way in hell RSI will take 10 kids from singapore in the program..the maximum they take is 3 or 4 per country and that is mostly from china or like...so i dont think there is much truth in this...

"Singapore didnt have 10 students to RSI this year. There were 5 I guess."
This is possible..and obviously its correct coz ashish went there..because when cee told me that they dont have a quota they said for example singapore had more students than usual last year..

"Skewed because it is quite probable that they did not apply to MIT"
once again right...because from what i know in 2004 out of the 80 RSI students..about 50-60 applied and only 2 were rejected from MIT.

"Skewed because it is quite probable that they did not apply to MIT"
I can vouch for that..it is very very very competitive..infact sort of more competitive than getting into MIT itself. (the intake is 6.6% compared to MIT's 14%)

Though SAT I isn't mandatory everywhere - it does create a good impression of the student- not the final word though!

Ashish - probably Dexter was talking abt some previous year!

True, RSI is really competitive but then so are a no of other things like Olympiads and KVPY etc... not everyone applies true --- but in a country like India - the competition is tooooo tough even if not everyone applies! As a fact , in the past IIT Rank 1s have been KVPY Scholars since it was started in 1999 !!! - I believe KVPY is sort of equiv to RSI in India!!

Ashish ----- RSI people said that they recruited Indians for RSI through KVPY - what does this mean????

"I believe KVPY is sort of equiv to RSI in India!! "
Just "RSI of India" not RSI itself. :p

"Ashish ----- RSI people said that they recruited Indians for RSI through KVPY - what does this mean????"
It means nothing becasue its not true...I have been in contact with the admission staff or RSI for the past 7 months and the only way you will be selected is throught their application.

I remember going on the MIT thread and meeting a guy whose friend had a 480V (or so), a long time ago.

How many people apply for RSI?

abt 1200 apply each year..and 75-80 are selected.
