Will I like RHIT?

<p>I am currently a high school senior and have been admitted to RHIT. As it is, I have been offered a pretty generous financial aid package and will more likely than not commit to RHIT. There is, however, a looming concern that I have.</p>

<p>I am a very social person, and as such, I do have some preferences when it comes to college social life. How frequent are parties? Are a lot of people very socially awkward, or will socializing be very easy?</p>

<p>I would recommend visiting the campus if you can since there’s only so much you can get offline. I’m attending next year, and from what I’ve gathered Rose is not a “super” party school, but most kids socialize and party on the weekends. When I visited campus most everyone had a great personality, but if you do want more friends, there are also two colleges nearby (all-girls Saint Mary-of-the-Woods and Indiana State). </p>

<p>Other things you may want to consider:
-Rose is ~80% male.
-Rose is ~90% white.
-Terre Haute is a small town, but Indianapolis is only about 1 hour away.
-Freshmen can have cars on campus (parking is free).
-For a college, Rose has a more conservative bend.
-Everyone I’ve read on CC who has attended Rose seems to love it and believes the college offers a great education.
-If it turns out that you do not want to major in math/science/engineering (or economics), you will have to transfer out of Rose.
-I heard rooms/beds are cleaned every week or so (just a nice thing).
-The open door policy and campus honesty are amazing (Everyone leaves their dorm doors open and if you leave your $2500 laptop computer outside, you’ll have to be more worried about it being rained on than someone stealing it!)
-Rose has an indoor pool, track, weight room, and basketball court along with an outdoor track and (if I recall correctly) a football field.
-From what I’ve read, drinking is not as active as it is at larger schools, but kids do drink.
-Homework at Rose is more mandatory than at other colleges.
-You can get an internship starting your freshman year.</p>

<p>Any questions?</p>

<p>Thank you Himmer! Your post was very informative and does alleviate some of my worries. And yes, I will be going to RHIT for an overnight stay later this month.</p>

<p>I’m a current freshman at Rose studying chemical engineering.</p>

<p>-As a female, I wouldn’t feel safe walking alone in Terre Haute, but I feel completely safe at Rose.
-Weekly housekeeping is AMAZING! Floors are vaccumed, desks are cleaned, and bed linens are changed and made (if you use the school’s sheets).
-Terre Haute (pop. ~60,000) is a lot bigger than the town I grew up in (~12,000) so it seems large to me. There are TONS of restaurants both on the Rose side of the Haute and the side of Terre Haute at the other I-70 exit. The variety is good because the cafeteria doesn’t serve dinner on the weekends.<br>
-There is an econ major here, but you have to start with it as a double major, I think. Don’t quote me on that, but it does exist here.
-The open door policy is wonderful. There are people who lock their doors, but they are few and far between. </p>

<p>There are a lot of things Rose is tough on, to name a few:
-Academic honesty (if you’re caught cheating, it’s school policy to kick you out)
-Theft (someone last year got caught stealing money/clothes from his/her roommate and he/was was kicked out)
-Illegal drugs</p>

<p>The rule is (for the freshman dorms) that if the RA sees alcohol, he/she has to pour it out. There’s no getting written up (unless you are being incredibly obnoxious). In my opinion, this is why we don’t have student that drink themselves to death. Yes, it happens, but people are generally really responsible about alcohol here. Personally, I don’t drink, but I don’t care if people do. </p>

<p>There are socially awkward people (of course), but there are a lot of very social people here. Greek life is reasonably active on campus, but there isn’t a stigma about being Greek/non-Greek (I’m not). </p>

<p>Having a car on campus is definitely a plus (driving to get food on weekends), but it’s easy to find someone to ride with if you don’t have a vehicle.</p>

<p>The SRC (gym) is AMAZING. The Indianapolis Colts had their training camp here for several years, and they essentially paid for our amazing sports facilities. The SRC has well-stocked cardio and weight rooms, a very nice indoor track (they also use it for various IM sports like basketball and volleyball, and the basketball fieldhouse is pretty nice as well. The football field is turf, and the tailgating is pretty good for a Div III school (according to my parents).</p>
