i’m incoming as an english major, but i’ve always planned on double majoring in art or design, but i don’t understand how i’ll ever do that if the elementary courses are restricted to majors only/crazy difficult to get into.

is there any chance of ever getting into those classes? how would i go about it?

ok…first of all…if you plan on dbl majoring in design (I’m a 4th yr des major) expect to be at UCD in the summer- for multiple summers. end of story. There is no way a design student cannot have taken any summer sessions classes simply because there are not enough design classes to go around. and additionally, because you did not declare as a des or art studio major when you enrolled…you’re going to have a hell of a time getting classes. I cannot even get into des classes in the fall (I was declared as a freshman), and I"m supposed to be graduating in the spring.

**I do suggest that if you can afford it, to study abroad. I just came back from the Painting in Umbria & Rome program (it’s only 1 month, gives 8 units of credit ART 7/198 for me, but also cost about 8K).

If you’re seriously considering des or art (maybe even try an art studio minor, its only 20 units…there is no des minor) and have an early pass time (compared to your freshmen compadres), try waitlisting for classes (DES 1 and ART 2). there is a slim chance of getting into Des 1, which is only offered in the fall and is a class that will screw you over as it is needed before taking ANY other design classes (and design requirements are extremely strict and grading is now lopsided). Otherwise, if you have a late pass time…and really want to dbl major…look into planning out all the classes you need to take your freshman year now. Try to finish all of your GE’s, your foreign language requirement and and any lower div major requirements so that when the time comes that you can get into des or art classes in the following years…you won’t be weighed down by english classes that you decided to take at a later time.

let me know if you need any other help. i dont mean to scare you about the difficulties of getting into these classes, it definitely can be done with some advance planning.
