Will I qualify for this?

"Honorably discharged military veterans, their spouses and dependents, are eligible for resident tuition rates and must complete our residency application and provide proof of honorable discharge."
My father was honorably discharged from the military, and I am putting in an application for the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. The only thing is my mom claimed me as a dependent on her tax return which means my dad won't be able to. I'm going to call my admissions counselor tomorrow to ask her, but I'm anxious to get some opinions.
Thanks

you are still your father’s dependent, regardless of IRS… AFAIK.

Dependency on military personnel/retirees

and

Dependency for tax purposes

and

Dependency for financial aid applications

are three different things that have their own definitions.

Yes, you are your dad’s dependent for all things military. If your mom claims you on her taxes, you are her dependent for tax purposes. Who you have lived with the most in the past 12 months determines which you are dependent on for financial aid purposes.

And yes, if they live in two different states it is entirely possible for you to be considered an in-state applicant in both of those states by virtue of having a parent (even if not a financial aid or tax parent) resident in that state.

So, do communicate with the financial aid officer, and find out what you need to do to clarify your specific situation.

Good luck!

Thank you for the quick replys. I got in touch with school, but because it is a new policy for the new freshman class, they don’t have all the details ironed out yet. Thanks again.
