Next year (my junior year) my schedule will look something like this
-AP Physics
-Pre-Calculus
-AP English
-AP Biology OR AP Chem (whichever my school decides to offer)
-my decided history class
-AP Computer Science OR a medical related course
-elective
I have absolutely no interest in history. I graduated AP Euro with a low A. My future track will definitely be something science related, and possibly medical related. I don’t want to overwork myself but I also do not want to regret not taking APUSH. I also really can’t risk my GPA at this point, as it’s already low (3.7 unweighted, 4.1 weighted). I am not planning on applying to any LARGE reach universities (IE: Stanford, IVY’s, etc) but I might end up applying to a dream school just because. I would solely take APUSH to appeal to more colleges, however I am going to do something science related in the long run, so will it really matter? All input is appreciated. Also, I DO plan on taking an AP history class my senior year (AP Gov & Macro-Micro Econ) so please take that into account as well. Also please note that if I do take APUSH, then I will push AP Computer Science to my senior year. I’m not a cyborg.
Given that schedule (challenging), I would not worry. I have heard colleges prefer that students take the advanced classes in areas they are interested in, not in everything. Could work to your advantage.
I don’t like history either, but my AP classes in HS endured that I got out of all my history gen ed requirements in college. Just something to think about.
History is not my best or favorite subject either. I took APUSH for first semester of junior year, and I dropped it second semester. I couldn’t handle the class because of the way my teacher taught (long story, but won’t go there) and for the simple reason that I hated history. Dropping out of APUSH was the best decision I ever made. No matter how bad it looks to colleges, I didn’t care because I knew I’d be acing the new class and I didn’t have to worry about sleeping at 2 AM every night. APUSH is a course geared towards reading. You’re going to need some memorization skills as well. Given the fact that you’re planning to take AP Physics and AP Chem (or Bio), I don’t think APUSH is a necessity in your schedule. Those three AP classes are considered some of the most rigorous at a lot of schools. Even without APUSH, your schedule looks strong and impressive. Good luck!
You’re taking many difficult classes already, so I don’t think you should push yourself too much if you don’t like APUSH. I’m in APUSH right now and it’s a lot of work. In our school we have to self study the chapters and I’m often up pretty late taking notes and studying. Your classes are already very challenging so I’m sure colleges will understand if you don’t take APUSH. Whatever you decide, make sure not to over exhaust yourself
As long as you have some base of history/ social studies, you should be fine ditching the APUSH. It takes up a lot of time and people who take it should be passionate about history. Don’t sweat it, you seem to have a solid course load.
