Will I still feel comfortable at Duke if...

I don't like parties.
I do not drink.
I do not plan on joining a fraternity.
I don't mind studying in the library on a Friday night.
I am not interested in basketball, or any major campus sports.

Also, will I be able to find many people at Duke who are like me?

Wow...hmmm. You really narrowed down the list there. Sure, every school has its share of shut-out bookworms, you just have to find them. I have a feeling that you will like partying and drinking and socializing once you go to ANY college. (Peer pressure is a *****).

You'll find people like you, you are bound to with 1600 students in your class but I think it'll be harder at Duke than at other colleges.

I am like you. =) I never found it lonely. (I'm a senior now.)

I will say, however, that I have been converted to the basketball thing. It took me a couple years, but I'm a moderately serious fan now. It'll get to you.

Ah, a kindred spirit! I can speak from experience here. :) That's one of the nice things about Duke- it's big enough that pretty much everyone can find a niche. It may take a while, but you'll settle in. You have to look in the right kinds of places- the music building is usually quite popular, for example. There's always stuff going on- plays, music performances, films, etc. Be pro-active during orientation and get involved in several groups on campus- you'll meet some amazing people, many of which are bound to have your interests.

chlor, i think we may easily become friends once we get to duke.

So, here's a "call and answer" reply to OP:

I don't like parties. You will definitely have company. And then the company you keep will end up deciding to have fun together, thus constituting a party. So the "no party" set will continue to be the null set

I do not drink. You will definitely have company. Even if I do try to get people over 21 to at least taste some wine on occasion...

I do not plan on joining a fraternity. You will definitely have company. Though you may end up decideding to join one once here, or a selective living group, or a block of friends

I don't mind studying in the library on a Friday night. You will definitely have company. At least until the library closes. Though some of us will encourage you to believe that Friday nights (and other nights) are sometimes best spent not at the library and doing other things - like going to concerts, or museums, or sitting on the back porch of GA with a pizza and some friends

I am not interested in basketball, or any major campus sports.*You will be alone. *

Just kidding :)

lol you will be fine. Btw for your freshman housing, look into brown, there should be a lot of people with one or more of your interests

So I should avoid Brown if I'm the exact opposite of the OP?

^
Apparently you haven't heard about Brown's naked parties. There's definitely a party crowd at Brown.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

good one

Maguo, Brown is the substance-free dorm. The only way you'll get put in there is if you request substance-free housing...if you don't ask for sub-free, you won't get Brown. But other than that, you can't really "avoid" dorms, since dorm assignment is totally random (unless you do FOCUS - but you can't know which dorm each FOCUS is assigned to before you apply for the program, so that doesn't really do anything either).

You mean you haven't heard about the wild party crowd over there, alex? I'm in Alspaugh, and we innocents can barely sleep at night for all their partying across the quad. It's terrible, I tell you. :p

(PS. If any of you seniors can't tell, I am DEFINITELY joking)

I'm sorry, but I don't quite understand why you applied to Duke. Did you ever think of places like Johns Hopkins, MIT, and Carnegie Mellon?

You don't have to be interested in basketball to apply to Duke or to succeed here. Maybe he is more interested in the education, professors, and campus. I am not a big basketball fan (especially on TV), although I did go to a few men's and women's games this year.
