Will it be hard for me to establish residency?

Accepted into UCSD and will most likely submit my SIR there. I had to answer “NO” to the simple questionnaire so I think the “big form” is coming my way once I do the SIR.

23, have not been claimed as a dependent since 2010
Moved away from Kentucky in mid-August because I wanted to be self-employed and believed I’d have more chance of finding business in California (I was correct). Got a drivers license within a few days.
Filed part-year taxes for KY and California. Owed California state taxes due to being self employed and paid them
Do not own a car so don’t have registration to show. However I sold my old car to my sister in KY before I left and found out she didn’t put it in her name until MONTHS later. Can residency officers even see this? Will it hurt me?
Have a library card and all my bank accounts/credit card addresses/cell phone were established in CA when I moved, but no voters registration card. I have never voted anywhere (sorry). Anything I can think of that is documented on paper is currently established in CA.
Decided a couple months into the move to continue my education so began the processing of applying to various UC’s.
Utilities aren’t in my name, they are in my roommate’s name and I pay him half

Do you think I have enough to prove residency or will it be a horrible battle for me? I actually moved here to be a resident and decided to continue my education later. Would massively suck if I didn’t get residency!

I don’t think you will be able to prove residency because of your lack of paperwork in your name only. Also, you need at least a full year’s residency with written proof:

“The adult student/parent(s) must be physically present in California on a continuous basis for at least 366 days. Residence may not be established in absentia and the prior residence must have been relinquished. The 366 days required to fulfill the physical presence requirement must be immediately prior to the residence determination date for the relevant term.”

When you apply to the UC’s that’s usually the date that they consider to be your residence determination date. So, 366 days prior to that date determines your residency date.

Working part-time in California doesn’t help a whole lot because all OOS students do this.

@aunt bea it says in the very document you gave me that residence must be established by 12/9/14 for the 2015 quarter. But yes, I agree with the paperwork problem.

for anyone reading this in the future, i got residency!!! all they ended up asking for in addition to the expected stuff is bank statements from the last 18 months. there was very little push-back. it was surprisingly easy, even though they say people under 24 will probably not get residency. i also made sure to label everything clearly and include a really thorough explanation to help them along. remember they have thousands of students to do this for and the easier you make it for them, the better.

docs i provided were:
2013, 2014 tax return for me, my mother, and father
last 18 months of bank statements
welcome letter from LA fitness stating my home gym in california
first month phone bill from verizon with new CA address
drivers license
lease which clearly stated i pay portion of utilities as part of my rent (i explained this in my cover letter as well)
paperwork from fedloan servicing that shows what i got in loans, as well as my 1098-T forms which state the amount i paid in tuition and the amount i received from scholarships and grants
