how much do you guys pay for the rental each month??
is $600 for a room reasonable?

$600 for a room is reasonable considering dorm rates.

Most students search for housing in April and May and sign a 12-month lease. Attempting to find an apartment in August will be difficult considering you'll be moving in August.

Stick with the dorms unless you live close by to CAL. It's easier the first year.

When you say a "room", I assume you mean a room in someone elses apartment. If that's the case then I think $600 in very reasonable, but if you meant a studio then $600 is not nearly enough. My advice would be to obsessivly check craigslist and try to get out here as soon as posssible before all the good places are taken. Just about everyone in my apartment complex is in the process of movign and my landlord has been showing the apartments for a couple of weeks already, so you should try to make the move sooner rather then later.

G&S:

Correct me if I am wrong, but it is my understanding that living in dorms the first year helps establish friendships that last for the next four more years. Isn't it recommended that freshmen live in dorms?

Of course, this is not applicable if yidong is a transfer or a non-freshmen.

sorry I forget to mention I am a transfer student..

how about living a little far away from berkeley?(Richmont..)will the rental be lower than living at berkeley?

do we have to pay for the car parking?will the financial aid/scholarship pay for our parking permit?

is taking AC bus free if I carry the Cal ID?

you might want to consider applying to the co-ops. room and board runs about $750/month plus a few hours per week of work.

$600/mo for a studio will not get you much in the bay area, or is limited to dicey areas.
