Will it hurt my chances if I skip spring quarter?

Hello everyone!

So I attended UCSB for my first year but left and am attending De Anza College this year. I have 36 AP units (which I believe aren't being counted towards the maximum unit count?) and 43 UCSB units and for fall quarter, I will be completing 14 units at De Anza. Quarter units, that is.

I am applying to several UCs (Berkeley and Davis my top choices) and by the end of fall quarter, I will only have to take 3 more courses to complete my IGETC and major (history) requirements. I plan on taking all three next quarter (winter) because if I take less units, I believe I won't receive financial aid and will get kicked out of the honors program. If I take all the courses in the winter quarter, I won't have any necessary classes to take in the spring and I sort of don't want to because I believe I will already be over the minimum units after fall quarter and I don't want to increase units in the chances of becoming a high-unit junior or senior.

Anyway! My question is, will the UCs view my missing spring quarter as a negative element and possibly factor it into their decision making process? I really don't want to hurt my chances of getting in.

Thank you so much!

Through the regular UC transfer application it does not appear that attending in the spring term prior to enrollment is a requirement for admission. However, you will be required to explain your “gap” in education on the UC App. It would be wise to still do something constructive with the gap term - full time job, participate in an organization outside of campus that may be related to your major, etc - especially for UCB and UCD.

Before skipping the term I’d also advise you to double check you have all the required classes for IGETC completion and major prerequisites. Last thing you want to happen is have the UC tell you that you’re actually short one class for IGETC when you knew you could have taken the course with the extra spring term.

So, if you’ve confirmed with both UCs that you’re IGETC should be cleared (either via email with admissions or with an admissions representative when they visit campus) and you’ve taken all the major courses according to Assist for both campuses, then it should be okay to take that last term off of school (but still do something worthwhile that can help you).
