Will it really look good on a college app?

I'm going to be a sophmore this fall and I'm thinking about studying abroad in Junoir year. It seems like an amazing experience and I'm not really worried about the home sickness, culture shock, etc. My worries have more to do with my resume for college. Right now I'm a pretty serious athlete in the top 3% of my class. To go abroad I will have to quit my main sport, will that make me look inconsistent? And I will also loose my shot at Valedictorian or top 10 because I will most likely only receive "pass" or "fail" grades all of Junoir year. I plan on either going to premed or engineering school. Will this hurt my chances of getting into schools like Northwestern or Johns Hopkins?

If anyone who had studied abroad reads this, can you give me advice on how hard it is to take classes overseas? I am thinking about doing online school, but I don't know if I will have time. Any thoughts?

Thanks :)

No point of studying abroad in HS. Complete waste of time. You won’t be able to truly experience everything because of age, supervision, etc. Wait until university to study abroad. You’ve got many years ahead of you to go abroad, right now isn’t good timing.

^ dont listen to him. Any opportunity to go abroad, let alone study abroad is an extraordinary experience at any age. Colleges aren’t blind to the consequences of traveling abroad. With that said, the weight an experience like that has on your resume far outweighs any negative consequences. I say go for it.

^^^

I’ll start off like the guy above.

Don’t listen to him. Seriously, you are right on track to get into top schools. Study abroad in university when you can actually make the experience worth the cost.

still as confused as ever… but thanks for the advice guys haha

life isn’t a college application. Still, it will look good in almost any case. If you can afford it and want to do it - then do it. Its fun, you will learn some things and grow as a person.

There also is no rule that one is only allowed to leave his homecountry once before graduating from college. Sure you will learn more during that time but HS is also about fun. Have some fun.

I have a parent that studied abroad in high school. He studied abroad in California. He never went home.

Certainly changed my life for the better :D
