Will letter of rec from U of M tenured professor help in admissions?

Good family friend is a long-time tenured professor, in the department I potentially want to study in. Will a letter of rec from him be that helpful? I don't want to be a bother or make him feel like I'm taking advantage of his kindness by asking. Thank you.

It wouldn’t hurt but what they really want is a recommendation from a high school teacher who will know what kind of student you are. I question whether the professor will be able to add anything other than a connection to U-M and a reference to your general character.

1) Is there a limit to how many letters of rec you can submit? I’ve read about Ivy applicants submitting letters from teachers, business leaders, politicians, et al., but unsure if Michigan is different.

2) Does the “high school teacher” letter of rec have to be a teacher from my high school or can it be a dual enrollment teacher from local university? I was considering enrolling in one the family friend’s sections this fall, which would bolster his ability to write about my capabilities in his department.

Thank you.
