I am pretty tan right now, and I don't want to get any more tan. I live in Illinois and my skin gets darker in the summer, but when the winter comes around, it lightens up to a nice shade. I can deal with how dark I get in Illinois; the problem is, that I want to move to a state that is warmer than Illinois, like anywhere in the south, but my skin would get darker than I want it to be due to UV levels.

Will living anywhere in the southern US make you significantly darker than it would if you lived up north? If it won't, then I'm definitely considering moving south. I'm assuming that you can lose your tan in the south as winter comes around, just like in the north.

The only reason why you may become more tan in the south than the north is if you spend significantly more time outdoors than before, such as for a job, sport, or extracurricular. Otherwise, you’ll likely be in buildings. I’ve moved from the north to the south, and I’m not any tanner now than before. Yes, I lose my tan in the winter, and only gain it back when I start going to the pool in the spring. (If one wanted to become tanner, there is a lot of opportunity to sunbathe in the south, but there also exist tanning beds in the north for the colder months.)

If it really worries you, you could apply sunscreen on as part of your daily routine.

Like Laura said, it depends on how long you stay outside. I have a year round tan, and I live in New Jersey.

^^Sorry, but that post made me LOL.

you could also just be more careful about wearing sunscreen whenever you go outside. just get a sunblocking moisturizer that you can use daily.

I am living, walking, biking, swimming, hiking… proof that living in the South will not make you more tan at all.

My coloring is not unlike this fellow…

It is good, however, for all of us (except for me, who is genetically incapable of tanning at all)) to wear sunscreen.

And, you know, ElectricTech…there are some very nice lotions with sun screens on the market for gentlemen that one can apply after shaving.
